Ear surgery is unique among plastic surgery procedures because it is performed as often for children as it is for adults. However, individuals should take caution to undergo ear surgery only when the timing is right. Depending on your case, the right timing could be as an infant, as a child, or as an adult.
Ear Surgery for Babies
Infants with abnormal-looking ears may be able to receive ear shaping correction. Typically, this is not surgery, but a molding device that is worn around the clock to reshape the ear. However, this is not a common procedure. The timing must be exact, and in most cases, it must be initiated within the baby’s first month of life while the ear cartilage is quite soft and moldable. Choosing to pursue cosmetic ear correction for babies may not be recommended unless there is a severe physical deformity of the ears. As parents must make this decision for their children, parents should consider the future with the present, and whether they are concerned about the possibility of their child enduring teasing from their peers.
Ear Surgery for Children
Ear surgery is commonly performed on children. Children that are under the age of five are still too young, as their ear cartilage is not yet developed enough for the surgery. Children who are five or older may be able to undergo this procedure if they are healthy, not prone to ear infections, communicative, and agreeable to the procedure. Surgery can technically be performed any time after age five, but delaying surgery into the pre-teen or teenage years can put the child at risk of ridicule, teasing, and bullying from their peers. Some children may have already endured teasing and do not know there is a procedure that can improve the appearance of their ears. However, parents should never force their children into undergoing surgery if the child is not amenable. A child that is intellectually and emotionally mature enough to understand the surgery and all that will be required during recovery can make his or her own decision on whether to get ear surgery as a child. A personal and open discussion should be had between the parents and the child to see whether surgery would be a good idea.
Ear Surgery for Adults
Adults who are healthy and free of life-threatening medical conditions can consider ear surgery at any point. Adults with ear deformities may have endured bullying in their youth but were unable to undergo surgery for various reasons. As a child or as an adult, ear surgery should be motivated by a personal desire for improvement, not to please outside influences. Adults can undergo this procedure when they feel prepared and when they are ready to see improvements in the appearance of their ears.
If you are not sure whether you, your child, or your infant should undergo ear surgery, request your consultation with Dr. Frank Agullo. As an experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Agullo can help you determine whether and when it is best to undergo this procedure. To schedule your appointment, call (915) 590-7900 or contact Dr. Agullo online today.

Many men and women who experience hair loss feel as though they are alone, when in reality, hair loss is a common condition. Hair loss can occur for a variety of reasons in men and women of all ages. If your hair has begun to fall out, there is no need to feel hopeless. The following hair restoration treatments can restore a fuller head of hair and improve your self-confidence and self-image.
Causes of Hair Loss
Androgenic alopecia (AGA) is the most common cause of hair loss. As this genetic condition can affect both genders, it may be called male pattern hair loss (or male pattern baldness) and female pattern hair loss. Male hair loss is far more common than female hair loss, especially as men age. In addition to AGA, hormones and age can contribute to male hair loss. Men in their 50s have a 50 percent chance of having noticeable hair loss.
Female hair loss can be caused by androgenic alopecia as well as other conditions such as alopecia areata, trichotillomania, loose-anagen syndrome, scalp infections, and scarring alopecia. Temporary hair loss is more common in women than men and is usually related to hormonal changes, hypothyroidism, stress, or certain medications.
Getting Treatment for Hair Loss
If you have hair loss, hair restoration treatment methods can help. An accurate diagnosis is essential, especially for women because they are more likely to have alternate causes of hair loss than AGA. Treatment for hair loss includes the following options:
- Medication: Hair loss medicines such as Rogaine® (minoxidil) and Propecia® (finasteride) can be used to treat hair loss.
- PRP: Platelet-rich plasma injections can stimulate hair growth, prevent hair loss, and improve the quality of the hair. The procedure consists of taking a small amount of blood from the patient and processing it to concentrate the platelets. The platelets in the body contain many growth factors, and these are injected into the scalp. The new protocols consist of an injection once a month for four months. The patient can resume normal activity the following day. Research has shown an 80 percent response rate.
- Laser Therapy: Photo-biotherapy can stimulate the hair follicles so that they produce thicker hair, which improves hair volume. This treatment is most beneficial for women who have diffuse hair loss. Low-level laser therapy (HairMax®) can also be used as a non-surgical treatment for male hair loss.
- Camouflage: Creative hair styling and the strategic use of sprays and powders can help conceal hair loss for those with enough hair to support these methods.
- Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) Hair Restoration Surgery: A strip of tissue is removed from the sides or back of the head and split into units of one to four hairs. These are then transplanted to the recipient site through tiny incisions. This technique is best for larger transplants and is the most commonly used hair transplantation procedure.
- Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Restoration Surgery: Tiny, round incisions are made around hair follicles on the sides or back of the head and removed one at a time. They are then transplanted into the recipient site. This technique is best for smaller areas and is a longer and costlier procedure than FUT.
With the right treatment, hair loss can be corrected and a fuller head of hair can be restored. If your hair is falling out, schedule your consultation with Dr. Frank Agullo for hair restoration treatment. Call (915) 590-7900 or contact Dr. Agullo online to book your appointment today.

Now that many plastic surgery procedures can be personalized for your needs, achieving your ideal body contour has never been more within reach. Dr. Frank Agullo offers the following techniques for tummy tuck surgery, one of which could be exactly what you need to redefine your waistline.
Comprehensive Abdominoplasty (Full Tummy Tuck)
A full tummy tuck smooths out the entire midsection. The incision scar is placed low between the hip bones so that it can be hidden by clothing. During the procedure, Dr. Agullo will tighten the abdominal muscles to produce an internal corset and create a firmer, tighter waistline. He uses the triple plication technique for a “Hollywood Waist.” He not only tightens the rectus muscles, but also the obliques. He will also remove the excess skin and stretch marks as well as stubborn abdominal fat. Part of the procedure often includes relocating the belly button once the excess skin has been removed. Liposuction is included with this procedure and can remove fat from the abdomen, flanks, and back.
- Abdominal wall muscle laxity
- Stretch marks and excess abdominal skin
- Skin and muscle laxity and excess fat in the entire abdominal area
Mini Abdominoplasty (Partial Tummy Tuck)
A partial tummy tuck improves the area below the navel. The incision scar is shorter than it is for a full tummy tuck, but it is located in the same general area above the pubic line. This surgery is shorter and may even be performed under twilight anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Dr. Agullo will tighten the skin and remove excess fat with liposuction from the lower abdomen to produce a flatter waistline. All improvements are seen in the lower abdomen below the navel.
- No abdominal wall muscle laxity
- Minor skin laxity below the navel
- No excess skin in upper abdomen
- Fat deposits primarily below the navel
Extended Abdominoplasty (Extended Tummy Tuck)
The extended tummy tuck improves the contour of the abdomen as well as the hips. The incision scar extends around to the back, which leads to a longer scar but enables more significant body shape correction. The scar is still easily hidden by bikini or underwear. Dr. Agullo often recommends this technique with high definition and comprehensive abdominoplasties because, in addition to providing the same benefits as a full tummy tuck, it contours the love handles and even provides a lateral thigh lift and mild buttock lift. Due to the complexity of this technique, it is the longest tummy tuck procedure but has a similar recovery time.
- Abdominal wall muscle laxity
- Stretch marks and excess abdominal skin
- Skin and muscle laxity and excess fat in the entire abdominal area
- Laxity in the lateral hips
- Excess skin and fat also in the flanks and love handles
Selecting Your Technique
Patients should select their tummy tuck technique based on the type of correction they need. Here are some general recommendations based on select tummy issues:
- Abdominal fat: liposuction, typically combined with any of the tummy tuck techniques
- Excess skin in the lower abdomen only: mini tummy tuck
- Excess skin and stretch marks in upper and lower abdomen: comprehensive or extended tummy tuck
- Abdominal wall muscle laxity: comprehensive or extended tummy tuck
- Tissue laxity and excess fat that are also in the lateral hips/flanks: extended tummy tuck
With any of these techniques, tummy tuck surgery can give you a more youthful and toned abdominal contour.

While you can receive the most invigorating and rejuvenating skin treatments in the world at a luxurious medical spa, the truth is that skin care begins at home. By adopting a daily skin care regimen, you can complement your MedSpa results and keep your skin looking healthy and youthful.
Your Daily Regimen
Your daily skin care regimen should include several steps in both the morning and the evening. The following steps are recommended as a baseline that can be adapted for individual needs. Dr. Agullo and his professional MedSpa staff can recommend specific products that are best formulated for your skin care needs.
Cleansing your skin in the morning helps wash off dirt, dead skin cells, and allergens that may have transferred from your pillow to your face during the night. A gentle cleanser is best and should be rinsed off with warm water, then patted dry. There are different cleansers that best fit your skin care type. For example, a person with oily skin will need a purifying cleanser with salicylic acid to help control the oil, while a person with dry skin will need a hydrating cleanser to help naturally cleanse the skin.
Toner contains active ingredients that address specific skin issues. A good toner can remove oil and soothe and repair the skin, diminishing blemishes and inflammation. It also prepares your skin for the next part of your skin care regimen.
3. Eye Cream
The sensitive skin around the eyes is incredibly fragile and prone to dryness. With constant movement of the eyes and occasional squinting, it’s no surprise that crow’s feet, fine lines, and puffy bags under the eyes are typically among the first noticeable signs of aging. Eye cream addresses these issues by stimulating collagen formation and promoting skin elasticity.
Antioxidants aren’t just found in blueberries and dark chocolate. In skin care products, antioxidants protect the skin by limiting the production of damaging free radicals. A good antioxidant can reduce signs of aging, calm inflamed skin, tighten and tone the skin, repair sun damage, and even reduce the appearance of scar tissue.
Moisturizer is essential for all skin types, including oily ones. A good moisturizer can prevent wrinkles, smooth out already existing wrinkles, brighten your complexion, protect your skin against irritants, minimize acne breakouts, calm irritation and itchiness, and even help your makeup look more balanced and even. Dr. Agullo recommends SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 as an excellent moisturizer made with ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids.
Even minimal sun exposure can ultimately lead to age spots and premature signs of aging. Daily sunscreen use protects your skin from sun damage. Many moisturizers and even makeup products contain SPF, which can help shorten your morning routine. This is good. However, most makeup and moisturizers only contain 15 to 20 percent SPF, so we recommend you use an extra SPF to obtain the maximum protection; 30 to 50 percent is what everyone needs to be using.
Your nightly cleansing regimen is even more important than your morning skin cleanse because your face has been exposed to makeup and environmental debris all day long. Carefully cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser to remove all traces of dirt and makeup at the end of a long day.
Toner should always follow your cleanser because it goes the extra mile in removing oil and soothing the skin. Be sure to use it at night after you cleanse and in preparation for your anti-aging products.
3. Eye Cream
The delicate skin around your eyes can use all the help it can get to prevent premature aging. After the process of removing your eye makeup, soothe and repair the soft, thin skin around your eyes by gently applying your favorite eye cream.
Correctors help fight age spots, hyperpigmentation, and other skin issues. NewBeauty magazine recently sought Dr. Agullo’s personal recommendation for a retinol corrector and quoted him in an online list of expert recommendations on retinols to buy. Dr. Agullo recommends SkinCeuticals Retinol 0.5 because it is time-released, mild on the skin, and less likely to cause redness or flushing as compared to other retinols.
5. Overnight Recovery Moisturizer
An overnight recovery moisturizer helps renew the skin and regenerate healthy skin while you sleep. Night recovery creams are the best way to close your daily skin care regimen and help you keep your skin healthy, young, and revitalized.
Dr. Agullo and his staff at the MedSpa can help you put together the ideal at-home skin care regimen to meet your needs. Call (915) 590-7900 or contact the MedSpa online to learn more.

If recent trends are any indication, the days of asking, “Does this make my butt look big?” are long gone. Now, having a full and round derrière is all the rage. One of the most popular new methods of butt augmentation is the Brazilian Butt Lift, in which fat is transferred from one area of the body to the buttocks. Here is why so many women are getting Brazilian Butt Lift surgery to give them the firm and proportioned butt they want.
Enhance Your Body Shape
Women who get butt augmentation with fat transfer often want a curvier figure. A Brazilian Butt Lift can help create the hourglass figure you’ve always wanted. It can also balance out your body shape by making your butt, hips, and chest more proportional to each other. An advantage that the Brazilian Butt Lift has over other butt augmentation techniques is that it uses fat transfer, which removes unwanted fat from other areas of the body. With the Brazilian Butt Lift, you can enhance your butt and minimize your abdomen, thighs, and other areas at the same time. This technique improves your overall body shape rather than just your buttocks.
Look Better in Clothes
Clothing is only flattering when it is worn by someone with the appropriate body shape. If your buttocks can’t fill out your jeans, your bikini bottom, or your dress/skirt, you won’t look your best. This is another reason women undergo Brazilian Butt Lift surgery. This procedure allows you to boost your backside so that your butt looks great in any piece of clothing.
Get Natural Results
The Brazilian Butt Lift does not use synthetic implants to enhance the buttocks. Women who are especially concerned about what they put into their bodies choose the Brazilian Butt Lift because it offers natural butt augmentation. The injected fat comes directly from your own body, meaning there is little risk of an adverse reaction. Additionally, the results tend to look more natural with the Brazilian Butt Lift. The buttocks are already filled with fat, and adding just a bit more fat can be the perfect touch. After this procedure, you will have a shapelier and fuller butt, but your butt will still look like it is naturally yours.
Yet another reason women undergo Brazilian Butt Lift surgery is to boost self-confidence. This procedure helps you look good, which can, in turn, foster a more positive body image. Knowing that you look good goes a long way in helping you feel good and confident. This confidence carries over into all areas of your life, helping you to live your life to the fullest.
These are only a few of the many reasons women are getting Brazilian Butt Lift surgery. To learn more about how you could benefit from this procedure, schedule your personal consultation with Dr. Frank Agullo. Please call (915) 590-7900 or contact us online to get in touch with us today.

Breast implants have come a long way since the first breast implants were inserted by surgeon Frank Gerow and Thomas Cronin in 1962. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new type of breast implant made by Allergan. The new Natrelle INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants can be used in breast augmentation to give women an even fuller, rounder look while maintaining a soft, natural feel. You may have heard of these implants already; some people refer to them as “round gummy bear implants.”
The Natrelle Difference
Natrelle implants by Allergan are designed to help women find their desired fit and appearance. Now, with these new implants approved by the FDA, there is another Natrelle option—an even better option—for many women interested in breast augmentation. The INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants are the newest development in gummy bear breast implants, which are known for their ability to retain their shape even if they are cut in half. Filled with a highly cohesive, stable gel and a high gel fill ratio, these new Natrelle INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants can provide a customized result for greater breast shaping options. Available in both smooth and textured surfaces for even more versatility, Natrelle INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants can benefit women with a variety of body shapes. Many women can achieve greater fullness and roundness by selecting these breast implants instead of other implant types.
Now Offered by Dr. Agullo
Dr. Frank Agullo is pleased to offer these implants as a new and better choice for many of his breast augmentation candidates. As an expert plastic surgeon, Dr. Agullo offers only the best to his patients and is excited that the Natrelle INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants are now approved and can be used to help women achieve the precise aesthetic results they desire. A very small percentage—about 5 percent—of American women have a naturally prominent, chiseled jaw. You may see this trait in some of the top most beautiful women in Hollywood, like Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock, and Keira Knightley. While attractiveness is subjective, a strong jawline in women is definitely a coveted feature in our present culture. It evokes a look of power, strength, and confidence in women, which is what many of the best supermodels express. This feature may be so desired because it is such a rarity, but it also has to do with the golden ratio of facial proportions and what many consider to be the basic standard of beauty for centuries.
What Is The Golden Ratio?
No matter what type of beauty you are personally attracted to, there are certain symmetrical “lines” in the face that always capture attention and please the eye. The golden ratio is a standard mathematical way to measure the proportions of the face, where the distance between certain features of the face compared to other distances of the face equals the ratio of approximately 1.618. The closer the measurements come to the golden ratio, the more balanced the facial features are and the more attractive the person seems to be. When a strong jawline is complemented by strong cheekbones, it forms facial symmetry that falls in line with the golden ratio and defines the main areas of the face and neck.
How Can I Get Strong Jawline Definition?
Dr. Agullo can create stunning facial definition in one procedure with a simple chin implant. Although it is a small implant and a less invasive cosmetic surgery, a chin implant makes a major difference in the appearance of the face and jawline. It creates a sleek, chiseled profile and a stronger appearance to the front of the face. To further define the face, some patients require removal of the buccal fat pad, which creates a hollowness below the cheekbone and above the jawline. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections to the masseters can also help to create a more feminine figure in patients with squared faces. Finally, fat injections to the face can help reinforce the cheekbones.
A similar result can be accomplished when sagging jowls are removed with a facelift or when wrinkles, sagging skin, and a “double chin” are improved with a neck lift. Both procedures create more definition between the face and neck, which is essential to a youthful and healthy appearance.
If you would like to achieve youthful jawline definition with chin implants or the removal of stubborn fat beneath the chin to create a stronger facial appearance, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Agullo. Call (915) 590-7900 or fill out our online contact form for additional information.

When scheduling your plastic surgery procedure, timing is everything. You want to make sure you are fully healed before a big event, such as a wedding, and that you do not have any major commitments planned during your recovery time. Here are a few things to consider before choosing your ideal surgery date.
For one reason or another, many people worry that they are too old for plastic surgery. Patients should know that age alone will never disqualify anyone from a particular procedure; however, older patients are more likely than others to have more serious health concerns, which may make elective surgery more of a risk. If you are considering plastic surgery and already feel “too old,” schedule a consultation to find out the pros and cons that are unique to you.
Future Weight Loss
Those who experience the best results with all body contouring procedures are at or near their ideal weight and have maintained it for at least a few months. Patients who plan on losing more weight after their surgery will still be able to schedule their surgery, but once they lose more weight, their body may not be as “tight” as their final surgery result, as excess skin may develop.
Cosmetic surgeries such as the tummy tuck will never cause harm to the woman or baby if the patient becomes pregnant after her surgery. However, patients should realize that a subsequent pregnancy will undo some of the results of a tummy tuck or Mommy Makeover procedure since pregnancy will stretch the skin and muscle and nearly always causes weight gain in different areas.
If you are in between jobs and are prepared mentally and financially to undergo cosmetic surgery, you should schedule your procedure before you find a job. Taking a couple of weeks off for recovery at a new job is not always possible or ideal. It is also better to have surgery when you do not have the added pressure of learning your new role.
Nonsurgical procedures are an excellent option for last-minute improvement before a big event. Although results can be seen immediately, it is a good idea to schedule treatments like lip augmentation and dermal fillers a couple of weeks before the date of an event to ensure you are happy with your results. For surgical procedures, such as a breast augmentation, patients may wish to schedule it about six weeks before an event to ensure the implants have settled into their new position and all swelling has completely subsided.
Future Cosmetic Surgery
If you plan to have a different cosmetic surgery a couple of years after the one you are considering, be sure to mention it during your consultation. Many times a patient will realize the time and cost saved if they decide to have both procedures done at one time.
When planning your surgery, there are many factors to consider including timing, options, and risks. Dr. Agullo can help you determine if the procedure you have in mind is right for you. To schedule your appointment, please call (915) 590-7900 or fill out our online contact form today.

In all honesty, there are advantages and disadvantages to virtually all cosmetic procedures. However, the true list of pros and cons is completely determined by the patient and will be different for every individual; an ideal procedure for one person may not be the best option for another. Here are the facts about breast augmentation with fat transfer to help you determine your particular list of pros and cons:
It Reduces Body Fat
Perhaps the best and most obvious advantage of breast augmentation with fat transfer is the loss of fat from other areas of the body. The donor area can be the thighs, hips, buttocks, or abdomen—almost any larger area of the body that has excess, unwanted fat. Patients experience a few inches lost from the particular area and can feel more confident in smaller or tighter clothing.
It Is Less Invasive Than Implant Placement
Breast augmentation with fat transfer is less invasive than implant breast augmentation depending on the amount of fat removed during the liposuction portion of the procedure. Liposuction will require only a few small incisions at the donor site but may result in swelling and bruising that will cause some discomfort during recovery. The surgical step of injecting the fat into the breasts is much less invasive than surgically inserting implants. Generally, the fat grafting procedure results in a shorter and easier recovery than implant augmentation.
It Has Lower Risks Than Implant Augmentation
With breast implants, patients run the risk of capsular contracture, implant malposition, rippling, and rupture. With fat transfer to the breasts, the patient avoids all implant-associated risks. The body also will not reject the patient’s own fat as a result of fat transfer.
The Breasts Look and Feel More Natural
Because the patient’s own fat is used, the breasts will look and feel more natural compared to silicone or saline breast implants. For those who would like more defined roundness and cleavage at the upper pole of the breasts, breast implants may be a better option.
When fat is injected into the body, it must form a blood supply to survive. Only about 50 to 70 percent of the injected fat is likely to survive in the breasts, which can lead to less dramatic results than with breast implants. After four to six weeks, the size of the breasts stabilizes. As long as you maintain your weight, the breast size will remain the same. If you gain weight, the breasts will increase in size. They will decrease in size if you lose weight.
It Provides a Less Significant Increase in Breast Size
Patients should expect an increase of about one to two cup sizes with fat transfer, while breast implants provide many more size options. Patients can choose to get more than one fat injection treatment to achieve the size they want, but this option often takes longer than breast implant surgery and may end up costing more as well.
Dr. Agullo’s patients have many choices when considering breast augmentation at his practice. During your consultation, he takes your desires, concerns, and physical anatomy into consideration so that together you will both arrive at the option that will best meet your needs.

I was recently interviewed by NewBeauty Magazine in regards to a new procedure that is known as Internal Spanx Surgery for the buttock. It was developed in Brazil and involves using Polytetrafluoroethylene mesh to lift the butt area. Currently, the procedure is being performed in Brazil and Portugal. You can read the full article in the NewBeauty blog. Here are the questions I was asked:
1. Is Polytetrafluoroethylene mesh safe to use in the buttock area?
There’s not enough data or long term follow up to say that the use of the mesh in the buttocks is safe. This is a new procedure. Although, there have been case reports of the use of mesh and even threads in the past to provide a less invasive buttock lift.
Mesh has been successfully used by others and myself to provide an internal silk bra (I have presented this in the past and will be presenting it in Japan next Wednesday at the ISAPS, International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Meeting) with little if any complications. It has also been used safely in the abdomen to provide a permanent internal girdle during tummy tucks.
2. What are some risks associated with a procedure like this?
The most concerning risk is that the mesh can become infected, which would require removal. Other concerns would be technique specific: asymmetry and palpability of the mesh.
3. Are there any limitations or drawbacks to having a procedure like this instead of a Brazilian butt lift or butt implants?
Each of the procedures you mention is indicated for different purposes. I believe each procedure may have its place for individual patients. This Internal Spanx procedure seems to provide a means to achieve a less invasive lift with mesh. It would likely be indicated in a thin patient with some buttock ptosis (drooping) but no excess skin, and no desire for increased fullness.
A more traditional buttock lift entails an incision similar to a g-string above the buttocks, which removes excess skin and even fills the buttocks using the patient’s own tissue.
For the patient looking for accentuated hips and buttock the likes of Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez or Nicki Minaj, you have to introduce volume which can only be achieved with fat transfer to the buttocks (Brazilian butt lift) or implants. The added benefit of a BBL is that the fat is removed from unwanted areas to create a small waist and transition to buttocks and hips. In thin patients without excess fatty deposits, the only option is to use implants.
4. What are your thoughts about the safety and effectiveness of this procedure?
The use of the Polytetrafluoroethylene mesh is off-label in the United States. Since it is a new procedure, long-term data and results are necessary to comment on the safety. It is always fascinating to see new procedures and techniques developed!
5. What would you recommend to a patient who was considering this procedure?
Seek a board certified plastic surgeon specializing in buttock procedures to consult on which procedure is ideal for you. Many surgeons discourage patients from bringing wish pictures, but for the buttocks, this is one of the best ways to convey what you want.
