Breast implants have come a long way since the first breast implants were inserted by surgeon Frank Gerow and Thomas Cronin in 1962. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new type of breast implant made by Allergan. The new Natrelle INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants can be used in breast augmentation to give women an even fuller, rounder look while maintaining a soft, natural feel. You may have heard of these implants already; some people refer to them as “round gummy bear implants.”
The Natrelle Difference
Natrelle implants by Allergan are designed to help women find their desired fit and appearance. Now, with these new implants approved by the FDA, there is another Natrelle option—an even better option—for many women interested in breast augmentation. The INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants are the newest development in gummy bear breast implants, which are known for their ability to retain their shape even if they are cut in half. Filled with a highly cohesive, stable gel and a high gel fill ratio, these new Natrelle INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants can provide a customized result for greater breast shaping options. Available in both smooth and textured surfaces for even more versatility, Natrelle INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants can benefit women with a variety of body shapes. Many women can achieve greater fullness and roundness by selecting these breast implants instead of other implant types.
Now Offered by Dr. Agullo

A very small percentage—about 5 percent—of American women have a naturally prominent, chiseled jaw. You may see this trait in some of the top most beautiful women in Hollywood, like Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock, and Keira Knightley. While attractiveness is subjective, a strong jawline in women is definitely a coveted feature in our present culture. It evokes a look of power, strength, and confidence in women, which is what many of the best supermodels express. This feature may be so desired because it is such a rarity, but it also has to do with the golden ratio of facial proportions and what many consider to be the basic standard of beauty for centuries.
What Is The Golden Ratio?
No matter what type of beauty you are personally attracted to, there are certain symmetrical “lines” in the face that always capture attention and please the eye. The golden ratio is a standard mathematical way to measure the proportions of the face, where the distance between certain features of the face compared to other distances of the face equals the ratio of approximately 1.618. The closer the measurements come to the golden ratio, the more balanced the facial features are and the more attractive the person seems to be. When a strong jawline is complemented by strong cheekbones, it forms facial symmetry that falls in line with the golden ratio and defines the main areas of the face and neck.
How Can I Get Strong Jawline Definition?
Dr. Agullo can create stunning facial definition in one procedure with a simple chin implant. Although it is a small implant and a less invasive cosmetic surgery, a chin implant makes a major difference in the appearance of the face and jawline. It creates a sleek, chiseled profile and a stronger appearance to the front of the face. To further define the face, some patients require removal of the buccal fat pad, which creates a hollowness below the cheekbone and above the jawline. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections to the masseters can also help to create a more feminine figure in patients with squared faces. Finally, fat injections to the face can help reinforce the cheekbones.
A similar result can be accomplished when sagging jowls are removed with a facelift or when wrinkles, sagging skin, and a “double chin” are improved with a neck lift. Both procedures create more definition between the face and neck, which is essential to a youthful and healthy appearance.
If you would like to achieve youthful jawline definition with chin implants or the removal of stubborn fat beneath the chin to create a stronger facial appearance, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Agullo. Call (915) 590-7900 or fill out our online contact form for additional information.

When scheduling your plastic surgery procedure, timing is everything. You want to make sure you are fully healed before a big event, such as a wedding, and that you do not have any major commitments planned during your recovery time. Here are a few things to consider before choosing your ideal surgery date.
For one reason or another, many people worry that they are too old for plastic surgery. Patients should know that age alone will never disqualify anyone from a particular procedure; however, older patients are more likely than others to have more serious health concerns, which may make elective surgery more of a risk. If you are considering plastic surgery and already feel “too old,” schedule a consultation to find out the pros and cons that are unique to you.
Future Weight Loss
Those who experience the best results with all body contouring procedures are at or near their ideal weight and have maintained it for at least a few months. Patients who plan on losing more weight after their surgery will still be able to schedule their surgery, but once they lose more weight, their body may not be as “tight” as their final surgery result, as excess skin may develop.
Cosmetic surgeries such as the tummy tuck will never cause harm to the woman or baby if the patient becomes pregnant after her surgery. However, patients should realize that a subsequent pregnancy will undo some of the results of a tummy tuck or Mommy Makeover procedure since pregnancy will stretch the skin and muscle and nearly always causes weight gain in different areas.
If you are in between jobs and are prepared mentally and financially to undergo cosmetic surgery, you should schedule your procedure before you find a job. Taking a couple of weeks off for recovery at a new job is not always possible or ideal. It is also better to have surgery when you do not have the added pressure of learning your new role.
Nonsurgical procedures are an excellent option for last-minute improvement before a big event. Although results can be seen immediately, it is a good idea to schedule treatments like lip augmentation and dermal fillers a couple of weeks before the date of an event to ensure you are happy with your results. For surgical procedures, such as a breast augmentation, patients may wish to schedule it about six weeks before an event to ensure the implants have settled into their new position and all swelling has completely subsided.
Future Cosmetic Surgery
If you plan to have a different cosmetic surgery a couple of years after the one you are considering, be sure to mention it during your consultation. Many times a patient will realize the time and cost saved if they decide to have both procedures done at one time.
When planning your surgery, there are many factors to consider including timing, options, and risks. Dr. Agullo can help you determine if the procedure you have in mind is right for you. To schedule your appointment, please call (915) 590-7900 or fill out our online contact form today.

In all honesty, there are advantages and disadvantages to virtually all cosmetic procedures. However, the true list of pros and cons is completely determined by the patient and will be different for every individual; an ideal procedure for one person may not be the best option for another. Here are the facts about breast augmentation with fat transfer to help you determine your particular list of pros and cons:
It Reduces Body Fat
Perhaps the best and most obvious advantage of breast augmentation with fat transfer is the loss of fat from other areas of the body. The donor area can be the thighs, hips, buttocks, or abdomen—almost any larger area of the body that has excess, unwanted fat. Patients experience a few inches lost from the particular area and can feel more confident in smaller or tighter clothing.
It Is Less Invasive Than Implant Placement
Breast augmentation with fat transfer is less invasive than implant breast augmentation depending on the amount of fat removed during the liposuction portion of the procedure. Liposuction will require only a few small incisions at the donor site but may result in swelling and bruising that will cause some discomfort during recovery. The surgical step of injecting the fat into the breasts is much less invasive than surgically inserting implants. Generally, the fat grafting procedure results in a shorter and easier recovery than implant augmentation.
It Has Lower Risks Than Implant Augmentation
With breast implants, patients run the risk of capsular contracture, implant malposition, rippling, and rupture. With fat transfer to the breasts, the patient avoids all implant-associated risks. The body also will not reject the patient’s own fat as a result of fat transfer.
The Breasts Look and Feel More Natural
Because the patient’s own fat is used, the breasts will look and feel more natural compared to silicone or saline breast implants. For those who would like more defined roundness and cleavage at the upper pole of the breasts, breast implants may be a better option.
When fat is injected into the body, it must form a blood supply to survive. Only about 50 to 70 percent of the injected fat is likely to survive in the breasts, which can lead to less dramatic results than with breast implants. After four to six weeks, the size of the breasts stabilizes. As long as you maintain your weight, the breast size will remain the same. If you gain weight, the breasts will increase in size. They will decrease in size if you lose weight.
It Provides a Less Significant Increase in Breast Size
Patients should expect an increase of about one to two cup sizes with fat transfer, while breast implants provide many more size options. Patients can choose to get more than one fat injection treatment to achieve the size they want, but this option often takes longer than breast implant surgery and may end up costing more as well.
Dr. Agullo’s patients have many choices when considering breast augmentation at his practice. During your consultation, he takes your desires, concerns, and physical anatomy into consideration so that together you will both arrive at the option that will best meet your needs.

I was recently interviewed by NewBeauty Magazine in regards to a new procedure that is known as Internal Spanx Surgery for the buttock. It was developed in Brazil and involves using Polytetrafluoroethylene mesh to lift the butt area. Currently, the procedure is being performed in Brazil and Portugal. You can read the full article in the NewBeauty blog. Here are the questions I was asked:
1. Is Polytetrafluoroethylene mesh safe to use in the buttock area?
There’s not enough data or long term follow up to say that the use of the mesh in the buttocks is safe. This is a new procedure. Although, there have been case reports of the use of mesh and even threads in the past to provide a less invasive buttock lift.
Mesh has been successfully used by others and myself to provide an internal silk bra (I have presented this in the past and will be presenting it in Japan next Wednesday at the ISAPS, International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Meeting) with little if any complications. It has also been used safely in the abdomen to provide a permanent internal girdle during tummy tucks.
2. What are some risks associated with a procedure like this?
The most concerning risk is that the mesh can become infected, which would require removal. Other concerns would be technique specific: asymmetry and palpability of the mesh.
3. Are there any limitations or drawbacks to having a procedure like this instead of a Brazilian butt lift or butt implants?
Each of the procedures you mention is indicated for different purposes. I believe each procedure may have its place for individual patients. This Internal Spanx procedure seems to provide a means to achieve a less invasive lift with mesh. It would likely be indicated in a thin patient with some buttock ptosis (drooping) but no excess skin, and no desire for increased fullness.
A more traditional buttock lift entails an incision similar to a g-string above the buttocks, which removes excess skin and even fills the buttocks using the patient’s own tissue.
For the patient looking for accentuated hips and buttock the likes of Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez or Nicki Minaj, you have to introduce volume which can only be achieved with fat transfer to the buttocks (Brazilian butt lift) or implants. The added benefit of a BBL is that the fat is removed from unwanted areas to create a small waist and transition to buttocks and hips. In thin patients without excess fatty deposits, the only option is to use implants.
4. What are your thoughts about the safety and effectiveness of this procedure?
The use of the Polytetrafluoroethylene mesh is off-label in the United States. Since it is a new procedure, long-term data and results are necessary to comment on the safety. It is always fascinating to see new procedures and techniques developed!
5. What would you recommend to a patient who was considering this procedure?
Seek a board certified plastic surgeon specializing in buttock procedures to consult on which procedure is ideal for you. Many surgeons discourage patients from bringing wish pictures, but for the buttocks, this is one of the best ways to convey what you want.

Superhero movies have been all the rage lately. In addition to the action-packed scenes, it’s hard not to notice the leading guys supporting these films. Whether it’s the bulky definition of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor or the lean muscular definition of Captan America, one thing can be said: abs are making the leading man. But the average guy can’t dedicate the time, money, and energy it takes for Ben Affleck to become Batman. If you have worked hard through diet and exercise but stubborn fat still prevents you from getting those superhero abs, then it might be time to consider liposuction.
Liposuction Isn’t Only for Women
Many men shy away from the idea of liposuction because there is the misconception that plastic surgery is only designed for women. The truth is that liposuction and many other plastic surgery procedures can be tailored to men to enhance their appearance while maintaining the masculine contours they desire. The stigma around male plastic surgery is a thing of the past, and many more men are choosing to become the best version of themselves through procedures like liposuction.
Getting a Superhero Six Pack
Liposuction helps men achieve the abdominal contour they desire by targeting specific areas of fat accumulation. A special contouring technique, known as 4D abdominal etching, carefully removes fat from around each abdominal muscle. This process removes certain areas fat while leaving others in place to create definition and a more muscular appearance. Newer liposuction techniques provide the greatest precision, allowing for custom-tailored results.
Preparing for Your Liposuction
Liposuction isn’t a weight-loss procedure. Men considering liposuction should have already lost weight naturally through diet and exercise. When you are within your goal weight, liposuction is used to remove stubborn fat and reveal your toned abdominal contour. For the best results, patients should attempt to tone their abdominal contour as much as possible prior to their treatment.
You don’t have to be an action star to have leading man abs. Everyone desires to be the best, most toned version of themselves. Schedule your consultation to see if liposuction can help you achieve the physique you desire. Contact our office at (915) 590-7900 or fill out our online contact form for additional information.

For every facial procedure, there seem to be three or more corresponding myths. Misconceptions may be the reason you won’t get a facial procedure or the reason you won’t get the results you want. Here are some of the most common myths and truths about facial procedures.
Myth: Everyone ages the same way.
Research has shown that not all individuals age the same way. A study showed that even identical twins age differently based on lifestyle factors. You should discuss your personal situation with your plastic surgeon to determine the best course of treatment for you.
Myth: Facial fillers and BOTOX® Cosmetic are just as effective as facelift surgery.
Facial fillers and BOTOX® Cosmetic can significantly enhance your appearance, but they cannot compare to facelift surgery, especially after a certain age. These treatments create the appearance of a lift and fewer wrinkles, but a facelift surgically lifts and tightens the underlying facial tissues for more permanent and dramatic results. Unlike injectables, facelift surgery offers long-lasting results and a solution for skin laxity. Some patients may benefit from receiving both types of treatment for facial rejuvenation.
Myth: To improve your profile, you should undergo rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty may be the answer for some individuals, but it is not right for everyone. For example, some patients who are dissatisfied with their profiles already have a well-balanced nose, but they have a small chin. Depending on your needs, chin surgery could be a more appropriate way to enhance a weak profile.
Myth: It doesn’t matter where you go for BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments.
Patients who receive BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments at discounted rate run the risk of having received a diluted form of BOTOX® Cosmetic or something else entirely. They also risk that their treatment may be performed by individuals who are not properly trained. To get reliable, high-quality results, only undergo BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments with a plastic surgeon or a trained expert nurse injector.
Myth: It doesn’t matter which filler you choose because they all do the same thing.
Each facial filler works in a different way and is comprised of a different substance or concentration. Some are better for lip enhancement, others are better for cheek volume, and still others are better for around the eyes or mouth. Most patients should receive a combination of fillers on different areas of their faces to get the best results.
Myth: Age-related fat loss in the face and neck makes you look younger.
The truth is that age-related fat loss in the face and neck makes you look older. Newer facial procedures such as fat injections can restore youthful softness to the face.
Myth: A facelift can get rid of sagging brows and forehead wrinkles.
Contrary to belief, facelift surgery does not target the upper face. Rather, it rejuvenates the middle and lower regions of the face. To target the brow area, you may need to undergo brow lift surgery.
Myth: BOTOX® Cosmetic and facial fillers are only for women.
More and more men are undergoing facial treatments. In fact, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, men underwent over 600,000 facial injectables treatments in the U.S. in 2015.
Myth: Facelift surgery gives you a windswept appearance.
This used to be true with older facelift techniques or amateur surgeons. Now, facelift surgery can restore a naturally youthful appearance so that you do not look “operated on.”
Myth: BOTOX® Cosmetic gives you a frozen appearance.
When administered properly, BOTOX® Cosmetic only “freezes” the muscles that cause wrinkles. You should be able to make normal facial expressions with fewer wrinkles and without any sign of a frozen appearance. It is essential that you choose an expert plastic surgeon so that BOTOX® Cosmetic is safely, carefully, and strategically administered.

Hair loss can be psychologically and emotionally devastating for affected females. A significant 30 percent of all women and 50 percent of women over age 40 have some degree of hair loss. There are many causes of hair loss in women, but the condition can be diagnosed, managed, and treated by Dr. Frank Agullo here at Southwest Plastic Surgery.
Common Causes of Hair Loss in Women
Hair loss in women occurs not as a receding hairline but as a diffused thinning across the top of the scalp. This makes female hair loss more difficult to recognize. Androgenic alopecia (AGA) is one of the most common causes of hair loss and can occur even in adolescence. AGA in women is typically genetic. Other causes of hair loss may include autoimmune disorders like alopecia areata, scarring as a result of injury, scalp infections, trichotillomania (compulsive hair plucking), and loose-anagen syndrome, where loose hair comes off while combing. In addition to these conditions, many other things may cause temporary hair loss in women. Female temporary hair loss can occur due to hormonal changes, hypothyroidism, ovarian tumors, anemia, nutritional causes, crash dieting, emotional stress, hair abuse, and lupus or other connective tissue diseases. Certain medications may also cause temporary hair loss, including blood thinners, anti-inflammatory drugs, blood pressure medication, cholesterol medication, seizure medication, oral contraceptives, and more.
Treatments for Hair Loss in Women
If you are concerned about your hair loss and your health, our hair restoration specialists can help determine the cause of your hair loss and select an appropriate treatment for you. With an accurate diagnosis, treatment may include medications, laser therapy to thicken your hair, camouflage practices such as creative hair styling, or surgical hair restoration. Two of the hair restoration procedures we offer at Southwest Plastic Surgery are Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). These procedures can restore a fuller head of hair for women suffering from hair loss.
Dr. Frank Agullo and his team of experts at Southwest Plastic Surgery are experienced in diagnosing and treating female hair loss. If you would like help in determining the cause of your hair loss or if you would like to receive treatment for your hair loss, schedule your consultation with Dr. Agullo. Even though massive weight loss can completely change your life for the better, it can also leave you with flabby upper arms. Excess fat and skin in the upper arms may prevent you from showing your arms or feeling comfortable wearing certain clothing items. Here are a few ways to tone your arms after massive weight loss.
Exercise Your Arms
Lifting weights is an excellent way to gain and retain muscle strength. Bariatric surgery patients and anyone attempting massive weight loss, particularly in a short period of time, should make an extra effort to build muscle during the weight-loss period because the body may lose muscle mass in addition to fat. Arm exercises with dumbbells, barbells, dips, push-ups, and other methods can help your arm muscles and tissues stay tight and firm and prevent some tissue laxity.
During massive weight loss and particularly after bariatric surgery, you will need to make sure that your body stays hydrated. This is important for many reasons, but a surprising reason is how much it can help your skin. Dry skin lacks resilience and may be prone to weakness and wrinkles. To keep your skin as healthy and strong as possible, stay well-hydrated. In a small way, this practice can help to maintain skin quality during and after massive weight loss.
While these steps can help to prevent some tissue laxity, losing over 100 pounds will most likely leave you with some loose upper arm skin despite your best efforts to prevent it. Brachioplasty (arm lift surgery) is a plastic surgery procedure that can eliminate excess upper arm skin and improve the contour of your upper arms so that they look smooth and tight. Many patients undergo brachioplasty and other similar procedures after significant weight loss to create a smoother silhouette and attain their hard-earned physique.
Dr. Frank Agullo can perform brachioplasty to improve the shape of your upper arms after massive weight loss. To schedule your appointment with Dr. Agullo, please call (915) 590-7900 or fill out our online contact form today.
