How to Prepare for a Facelift

How to Prepare for a Facelift

Female model touching her face with left handJust because there isn’t a way to halt the sands of time doesn’t mean you have let the signs of aging continually affect your facial appearance. With over 130,000 facelift procedures performed last year, more and more people are discovering just how easy it is to maintain long-lasting youth in their face.

After carefully researching the facelift procedure and deciding that it is right for you, next comes your very own personalized consultation at our Texas or New Mexico practice. In preparation for your facelift procedure, Dr. Agullo will ask you to do the following:

Avoid Smoking

You obviously know that smoking isn’t the best for your health, but did you know that it can interfere with the surgical process too? Smoking constricts the blood vessels, which causes increased inflammation to occur in the body. For this reason, it is best that you stop smoking at least a month before your facelift procedure.

Avoid Sun Exposure

A little daily sun is generally healthy, but it’s important that you stay away from the sun’s harmful rays as much as possible in the days leading up to your surgery. Tanning beds should be avoided altogether, and if you plan on being outdoors for an extended period of time, be sure to wear a sunscreen of at least SPF 15.

Exercise

Many patients believe that they should avoid working out and simply rest in the weeks leading up to their facelift procedure. Contrary to this belief, you are actually encouraged to get as much exercise as you can to ensure that your body is functioning at its best for the procedure.

Go Shopping

No, we’re not talking about going to you’re favorite clothing store. Instead, be sure to stock up on over-the-counter medications, such as Motrin, Tylenol, and Advil. Also, don’t forget to pick up some fresh produce and lean protein to to give your body the proper nutrients it needs to recover as quickly as possible from facelift surgery.

Make Driving Arrangements

After your facelift procedure is complete, swelling and discomfort will be apparent. Although these symptoms are normal, you will need to make sure you have someone to drive you home from the facility.

In-Office Otoplasty (Cosmetic Ear Surgery)

Gloved hands assessing a woman's earOtoplasty is cosmetic surgery to correct congenital ear deformities, most commonly to pin protruding ears back closer to the head.  Other procedures include reshaping the ears to be more symmetrical or reducing ear size to make them in proper proportion to the head.  Ear folds can be corrected, as well as earlobes torn by earrings.

Both children and adults can benefit from otoplasty.  It is important to note that otoplasty only corrects the outer surface of the ear; it in no way affects the patient’s ability to hear.  Surgery can be performed on children once their ear cartilage has completely hardened, usually around five to seven years of age.  The earlier your child can be brought in for treatment, the less chance he or she will be at risk for developing low self-esteem from being teased by classmates.

Depending on the procedure, otoplasty can take up to two to three hours and can be performed with local anesthesia and mild sedation.  An incision is made behind the ear; then the cartilage and skin is removed or reshaped to the desired effect.

Many otoplasty procedures can now be safely performed in office, saving the patient and parent’s time and extra costs associated with a hospital stay.

As with many cosmetic procedures, you can expect some mild to moderate swelling and discomfort for a few days following the procedure.  Many patients are able to return to work or school within five to seven days.  Dr. Agullo will meet with you/your child, discuss your expectations and potential results, and customize a recovery plan.  Call 915.590.7900 to schedule your consultation.

Liposuction Lite Helps Patients Get Rid of Unwanted Cellulite

Want to get rid of those pesky fat deposits but don’t have the time for a hospital stay?  Now you can!

Portrait of a young slender brunette wearing white lingerie measuring her waist Southwest Plastic Surgery offers in-office liposuction with mild sedation. This liposuction alternative is a great solution for those who have nagging little deposits of fat that don’t seem to go away no matter how much they diet and exercise, in places such as the area under the neck, the underside of arms – even those dreaded love handles.

How Liposuction Lite Is Performed

A tiny incision is made and a small cannula is inserted under the skin.  A laser within the cannula literally melts the adipose fat, which is then sucked out.  Since the patient is awake, he and or she can reposition themselves and give immediate feedback.  For example:  a woman comes in with fat around the knees.  Once the excess fat is melted and sucked out, the woman is able to stand up so the doctor is able to double check and make sure the knees are reshaped equally.  The patient also has the opportunity at this time to view the results and make any additional requests before the procedure is completed.

The device also coagulates blood vessels, reducing the amount of bruising and swelling that can accompany more traditional liposuction procedures.

Additional Benefits of Liposuction Lite

Because the procedure is performed under mild sedation, the patient is spared the risks associated with undergoing general anesthesia.  Overall costs are reduced as there are no charges for overnight hospital stays, anesthesia or operating room charges.  Best of all, there is very little downtime with mild sedation liposuction.  Depending on the procedure performed, the patient can return to work or normal activities almost immediately or, in some cases, the very next day.

Dermapen: A Less Invasive Approach to Facial Rejuvenation

Collagen is a protein in the skin that acts to support the skin and keep it elastic.  When collagen decreases over time, the skin loses it plumpness; skin starts to sag and fine lines appear.

The Dermapen is a pen-shaped medical device that is used to help turn back the hands of time.  The pen is rolled over the surface of the skin, creating micro injuries; these injuries, in turn, stimulate the production of collagen.  Skin lifts and tightens over time, and noticeable results can be seen within the first few treatments.

The Dermapen works great for:A woman with glowing skin smiling and touching her face on a yellow and white light background

  • fine lines and wrinkles
  • acne scars
  • photo aging
  • large pores
  • stretch marks
  • tattoo removal

How Dermapen Works

The Dermapen has a spring-loaded needle tip that moves in a controlled, automatic stamping motion; this motion minimizes pain and bleeding while producing consistent results across the area being treated.

Each sterilized, individual needle tip contains 11 fine needles whose depths can be adjusted during the procedure, based on skin contours and individual need. These tiny needles push facial rejuvenation topicals, such as hyaluronic acid and peptides, into the deeper layers of the skin, enhancing their effectiveness.

There is less downtime with the Dermapen compared to many other rejuvenation treatments, and treatment is less expensive than a fractional laser. Results can last up to two years.

Dermapen versus derma rollers

Due to its vertical needle stamping action, the Dermapen causes less epidermal damage than facial dermatology rollers. This action also eliminates the rolling scars typical of derma roller treatment.  It can treat areas that cannot be easily or safely reached with rollers, such as the delicate skin surrounding the eye area of the sharp contours around the nose. The Dermapen also has the ability to penetrate scar tissue.

What to expect the first few days

  • mild to moderate swelling, depending on the aggressiveness of treatment
  • possible pinkness or redness of the skin, similar to a sunburn

Get the Luscious Lips You’ve Always Wanted

Closeup of a woman's pink lips with a beautiful soft skin.

The lips are one of the most revealing aspects of the face and often project the first signs of emotion. For anyone who desires to maintain a youthful appearance, keeping the lips plump and smooth are musts. However, the lips begin to lose fullness as people age, eventually becoming thin and withered, which can make the rest of the face appear older and have a negative impact on a person’s self-confidence.

To restore volume and diminish the appearance of wrinkles around the lips, men and women of all ages frequently undergo lip augmentation.

Lip augmentation with filler or fat injections can provide long-lasting improvements by:

  • Restoring volume to the lips
  • Diminishing fine lines on the lips
  • Softening wrinkles around the mouth

At his El Paso practice, Dr. Frank Agullo regularly performs lip augmentation using a variety of injection methods.

Types of Treatment

Dermal Fillers

Injectable fillers used for lip augmentation are made of substances similar to those that naturally occur in the body. The most popular dermal fillers that are used for lip augmentation are JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® because they are FDA approved and easily absorb into the soft tissues. Although the results of fillers are not permanent, they typically provide satisfying results that last between six to eight months.

Fat Injections

Fat injections utilize the patient’s own fat tissue in order to provide permanent results. After fat is taken from an area of the body where it is abundant (abdomen, back, thighs), it is purified and injected directly into the lips.

Risks and Complications

The side effects of lip augmentation with injections are very minor in comparison to other forms of invasive lip augmentation. The lips may feel tender and appear slightly swollen or bruised directly after treatment, but these symptoms will subside over the following few days.
