Restoring Sagging Breasts

shutterstock_139607747Have you ever experienced that drooping feeling when you change your clothes? You look down and it although you hate to admit it, almost feel like as if you have a pair of saggy water balloons attached to your chest. A great bra may provide a temporary lift for a quick fix, but often the battle is truly apparent when you’d like to wear a little less. This descent of breast tissue is an unfortunate side effect of the natural aging process, but can also be caused by genetics, weight change, and having children.

But, you can take steps that will help your chest defy gravity. Having a Mastoplexy, or surgical breast lift, is an artful procedure to bring life back to breasts that are experiencing a number of problems created over time. Restoring the breasts can involve attention to sagging, unevenness, lowered volume, stretched areolas, and wilting of the nipples. Addressing these issues will bring back shape, size, and prominence to your breast tissue for a more youthful appearance.

Techniques Used for Breast Lifts

The three most commonly used methods of breast lift surgery are classified according to the way Dr. Agullo arranges the removal of excess skin and the incision methods associated with that technique. With each of these methods, it’s important to educate yourself about the specific plan for any breast rearrangement, and how it will impact your breast tissues.

Depending on your specific anatomical needs and preferences, you can choose between:

  • Traditional breast lift incisions
  • Vertical breast lift incisions
  • Circumareolar breast lift incisions

With the first method, traditional incisions border the outer edge of the nipple. Dr. Agullo begins with an incision near the bottom of the nipple line which extends to the lower fold of breast tissue, and an incision along the same fold. This method makes a kind of anchor shape, and may be also go by the name of “anchor lift” because of pattern that is left behind. This technique most benefits those individuals with extremely limp breasts.

For women with a moderate amount of sag, the vertical breast incision style is most appropriate. This process, like the last, brings the incision around the outside of the nipple area, then from there it extends to the fold of the lower breast tissue. It is often nicknamed the “lollipop technique” due to the pattern and shape of the incisions that are used.

And finally, breast lift incisions for the third type are often referred to as “donut” incisions. Circumareolar breast lifts are limited to the nipples, only affecting the tissues around the nipple’s outer edge. This operation is usually recommended for women with mild to moderate sagging. This process doesn’t rearrange a large amount of tissues within the breast, providing results that are a bit less intense.

Personalized Planning

Before and After Breast LiftBased on the extent of your excess tissue, sagging, and size of breasts, Dr. Agullo will decide which incision pattern will best provide you with the results you’re looking for. Combining a breast lift with another surgery, such as breast augmentation, may be recommended to reach the best possible outcome.

Before your procedure, we recommend that our patients look into before and after photos of breast lifts to get a better idea of the outcomes. This can help you achieve a better grasp on what type of results we can help you achieve. Remember to consider any scarring patterns, and preferably compare post-op pictures 2 years out from the initial surgery. Southwest Plastic Surgery has many before and after photos that you can compare during your consultation with Dr. Agullo. For mothers, we recommend waiting on your breast lift until after you are finished childbearing or breastfeeding, as pregnancy usually stretches breast tissue, and this could interfere with the finished appearance.

Misconceptions About Breast Augmentation and Lifts

shutterstock_256814590There are many reasons why some women may want to undergo augmentation mastopexy, or a breast lift – a procedure where excessive skin around the breasts is removed, to tighten and contour the overall chest area.

The results of a breast lift improve erase concerns such as stretching or drooping that commonly occur after a woman has had children, breastfed, lost weight, or aged. I typically recommend it for my patients that are experiencing sagging and reduction in the fullness of their breasts, along with procedures like breast implants. Yet, there are still a lot of misunderstandings surrounding this procedure – and many women wonder if it is something that they’ll actually need.

Common Misconceptions About Breast Lifts

There are two misconceptions that we frequently hear our patients bring up, and it is critical to clarify the information around these before any patient undergoes treatment here at Southwest Plastic Surgery. The first misconception I hear is, “I’ll only need one surgery, because I’m getting my lift and augmentation done simultaneously.”

In reality, this process involves two different processes to make the breast larger in the areas requiring fullness and smaller in the areas experiencing sagging. For some, not all patients, it is safest to have a series of procedures instead of forcing it into just one. This depends on the level of sagging, and also allows the body to heal itself on a more gradual scale.  Having a series of procedures can reduce risk of complications, such as reduced nipple sensation.

Before and After Breast LiftThe second misunderstanding regards scarring. “From what I hear, it’s just supposed to be an incision around the areola and nipple area, so scarring won’t happen.” Each person is different, which means their breasts and skin are different. Plastic surgery will always leave some type of scar; they can be minimal, or more prevalent. This is the trade off of cosmetic procedures: getting a scar, or not having the procedure done. Individuals may have their incisions in different locations than expected, but that can be discussed prior to surgery. Patients with more sagging will, generally, require more incisions to create a breast lift. Less sagging, on the other hand, will require fewer incision sites.

As with any surgical procedure, the best avenue to achieving your ideal breast shape is to first talk about it with a professional plastic surgeon before deciding to initiate any procedure. At Southwest Plastic Surgery in El Paso, we will be able to answer any questions and review concerns in order to assist you in making the most appropriate choice in care.

Improve Your Appearance Following Weight Loss

Improve Your Appearance Following Weight LossMajor weight loss can simultaneously be the most triumphant and frustrating experience in your life. It is no small task to stick to your diet and exercise plan. Shedding those unwanted pounds and reaching your goal feels amazing. What doesn’t feel as great? Not having the body you envisioned at the start of your weight-loss journey. What keeps many men and women motivated through their weight loss is the idea of the new, fit body they will have achieved at the end of it all. However, this healthier, leaner you is often obstructed by excess, sagging skin. If you are frustrated with your appearance, body contouring to improve your appearance following major weight loss may be just what you need.

What Is Body Contouring?

Body contouring includes a set of select procedures that are designed to eliminate excess skin and fat to enhance your body’s physique. Each body contouring procedure is customized to the patient in order to target your trouble spots and highlight your body’s natural curvature. Possible treatments included as a part of body contouring are:

  • Tummy TuckAchieves a flatter, smoother abdomen by eliminating excess skin and tightening the abdominal muscles
  • LiposuctionRemoves excess fat to enhance slender curves in women and create better body definition in men and women
  • Lower Body LiftTargets sagging tissues around the hips, thighs, and buttocks for a slimmer, more toned lower body

  • Breast EnhancementsMay include a breast lift and/or breast augmentation to restore firmness, shape, and volume to drooping, deflated breasts
  • Arm LiftRemoves sagging arm tissue for firmer, slimmer arms

Why Choose Body Contouring?

Body Contouring Before and After PhotosMany people struggle to avoid surgery during their weight loss, while others undergo surgery and don’t desire to do it again. It can be disappointing for some that surgery is their only option. However, body contouring surgeries offer numerous benefits that often outweigh the drawbacks of surgery, including:

  • Permanent and precise removal of skin and fat
  • Elimination of painful skin irritations and chafing caused by excess folds of skin
  • Removal of stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise
  • A stronger abdominal core
  • Enhancement of new, lean muscles
  • Customized procedures tailored to the patient’s needs

When Should I Consider Body Contouring?

Body contouring is often right for both men and women following major weight loss or for patients with large amounts of excess skin. Patients should be within their goal weight and should have maintained a stable weight for at least six months. Future weight loss or gain can affect the quality of body contouring surgery results. Some health conditions may prevent you from qualifying for body contouring, which will be discussed during your consultation.

If you are ready to reveal the new, fitter, and healthier you following weight loss, schedule your body contouring consultation with Dr. Agullo today. Contact our office at (915) 590-7900 or fill out our online contact form for additional information.

Plans for Plastic Surgery After Baby

shutterstock_317534825Real women aren’t the only ones who get plastic surgery. It turns out that Kim Kardashian has treated herself to a full mommy makeover after the birth of her 2nd child. The curvy 35 year old didn’t want to waste any time getting her body back in shape after the birth of her son – and that meant getting some of the best plastic surgeons to help her.

No detail was left out, and it seems as if she had no hesitations or anxiety about going under the knife whatsoever!

So what is she likely to have had done for her mommy makeover?

Tummy Tuck

Having your tummy stretched out by a baby more than a time or two can wreak havoc on the abdominal wall muscles and the skin around your waist. Saggy skin may not be able to bounce back on its own, leaving “flab” or a “muffin top” behind, even after weight loss. Tummy tucks also help tighten up the muscle underneath, so it’s not just about handling excess skin.

Liposuction

Baby fat leftover in the hips, legs, and tummy are hard to erase with exercise alone. Contouring the area with liposuction or some other type of laser therapy can give you a toned, flatter abdomen. Most opt for traditional liposuction, as it permanently destroys fat cells and makes it easier to prevent fatty buildup from coming back.

Breast Augmentation or Lift

Before and After Breast LiftKim has always been obsessed with her body, and it’s no secret why. Her vivacious curves are the talk of the town and something that many women compare themselves to when they’re consider having surgery done on themselves.

Even with those great curves, she likely experienced some breast growth, stretching, and sagging during pregnancy. Women often do, whether or not they nurse may not even make a difference. Kim will probably had a bit of a lift done to add more fullness to her chest and avoid drooping or sagging when she hops back into a bathing suit this summer!

Cosmetic Surgery “Down There”

Do we know if Kim had a vaginal makeover? No. But plenty of women do after they give birth to a baby. Why? Because it tightens up the skin, makes things look more tidy down there, and reshapes the inner labia so that the stretched skin doesn’t rub inside of your clothes. A lot of women do it to feel more comfortable in bed, and some even report that it increases their stimulation.

After having a baby, every woman experiences changes that can impact them physically, athletically, socially, and emotionally. There’s no shame in doing something about it, either.

Women like Kim who gain 40 or 50 pounds during their pregnancy (she admitted just 6 weeks before her birth that she had already gained 52 pounds) truly have their work cut out for them. Even if they’re able to drop the weight through diet and exercise, it’s normal to consult a plastic surgeon to polish off the finishing touches.

Losing Hundreds of Pounds: the Cosmetic Disadvantage

shutterstock_241360303For men and women that have lost hundreds of pounds with the help of surgery or lifestyle changes, excessive weight loss has an ugly downside: excess skin. It’s not uncommon for 20 pounds or more of leftover skin to be left hanging from a slim frame once all of the weight underneath is gone.

The Problem

For someone who should be feeling confident about their weight loss, the bags of stretched skin hanging from their arms or stomach can take an emotional toll. While mild weight loss can allow skin to “bounce back,” this rarely happens when we’re considering hundreds of pounds of weight being lost. This can leave people feeling unhappy or even uglier in their now-healthier bodies.

When my patients have undergone sleeve or bariatric procedures to lose weight, I work with them on fitting their excessive skin to their thinner frame. We start treatment once all of the desired weight has been lost, that way we aren’t worried about additional loose skin following the procedure.

Where’s the Confidence?

As you can see, weight loss isn’t the only part of feeling confident. So is having skin that fits your body. Weight loss alone just won’t cut it, so it’s important to keep a plan in mind for the end result. The 2nd phase of that plan is usually visiting with a plastic surgeon, such as myself, to remove the baggy skin.

Some people wear latex compression garments under their clothing to control sag through their waistline. This can be uncomfortable and limit your mobility, especially if you’re trying to have a more active lifestyle; or to even feel attractive with their partner.

Looking Your Best

If you’re wary of the curious looks or questions you get from strangers, it’s probably a good time to go ahead and see someone about tightening your skin. Doing so can help you “fit” your body even better, and allow your skin to conform to what is truly underneath.

However, just like drastic weight loss, skin-tightening treatments do require a bit of getting used to. It may be that you need to have a fairly immobile lifestyle for the first few months, as your incisions heal the way we want them to.

Psychologically, this can be a challenge – especially if you’ve taken to an active lifestyle. But if you’re committed, you don’t have to start over from scratch. You might even find that you’re able to be even more active, without having to wear compression garments.

The Process

Before and After Tummy TuckSo, what’s actually involved in having excess skin removed or tightened? It’s actually a series of procedures like a tummy tuck, breast lift, or arm lift. Excessive skin is pulled away and removed, while the remaining skin is conformed to your thin frame. We can even polish off your overall look with a bit of body contouring to reshape your curves in just the right places.

For my patients considering bariatric surgery or who have already lost a hundred pounds or more, I’m always very happy to meet with them to discuss their concerns. Some people come before the weight loss has started, and others wait until they’ve reached their desired weight. Whatever phase of the process you’re in, I’m confident that my El Paso cosmetic surgery team can help you get to where you want to be!

Is a Mommy Makeover the Best Way to Get Your Pre-Baby Body Back?

If you’re done having children and have made it a mission to get your body back to the way it was pre-kids, you’re not alone. Each year thousands of women enjoy the thrill of becoming a mother, but then face the daunting task of getting their bodies back into shape.

While some women bounce right back, others endure more physical tolls on their body. For instance, a very stretched tummy due to abdominal growth during pregnancy can leave saggy, folded tissues years after childbirth. For others, the breastfeeding process has caused stretching or droopiness of the breast, resulting in loss of fullness.

A rigid diet and exercise program may do the trick, but if saggy tissues are to blame, then a Mommy Makeover could be exactly what you were looking for.

What’s Involved in a Mommy Makeover?

Each time I meet with a woman to discuss a Mommy Makeover; I want to know what her goals are. Is it just the breasts? The tummy? Both? Something else? Buttock augmentation? A Mommy Makeover isn’t just one treatment in particular. Rather, it is a series of aesthetic procedures that are all performed at once – giving you great results that return your pre-baby body back to a reality!

Mommy Makeover Before and After

Depending on the actual physical needs of each woman, I will typically recommend combining treatments such as:

Breast Augmentation or Lift – Stretched or saggy breasts are a common side effect of pregnancy and nursing. Breasts may be much smaller and droopier than they were before you became pregnant. You would be amazed at what a simple augmentation or lift can do to restore natural breast fullness and contour. It’s a key to just about every Mommy Makeover that I perform.

Breast Reduction – Unlike women who experience shrinkage of their breasts during nursing, some women feel like their breasts are too large after having a baby. Reducing some of the fullness and lifting the breasts can create a fuller, more youthful appearance.

Abdominoplasty Excessive abdominal fat or stretched tissue can make your stomach appear saggy and increase your waistline. In most cases, I recommend a tummy tuck to reduce the skin in the area, remove fatty tissues, and tighten the abdominal wall. This leaves your stomach much flatter, and eliminates the “baby belly” that even daily trips to the gym can’t get rid of.

What to Expect

In most cases, you can expect to spend a bit more time recovering from a Mommy Makeover than you would just a breast augmentation or single procedure. Why? Because we complete everything at one time. Women who are physically active and have a strict workout routine do typically tend to recover quicker, as their bodies handle the stress much easier. I usually recommend taking at least two weeks off of work. If you still have small children, you will definitely need someone to help you care for them at home, as you will not be able to pick them up during recovery.

You’ll be thrilled with the results of your procedure! The makeover process allows us to refine your waistline, restore fullness to your breasts, and make up for what exercise can’t.

Consultations

During your consultation at my office, we’ll discuss the varying characteristics of your body that have changed since childbirth, and what you want to change. Then I will present a series of realistic plans that we can implement to give you both your body and your confidence back. If you’ve been embarrassed for far too long about the beating that motherhood has taken on your body, then you owe it to yourself to schedule a consultation.

The Top Cosmetic Procedures for Generation X’ers

Let’s face it; the forever-young-at-heart Generation X is beginning to see the impact of life on their bodies. And they’re starting to do something about it! Over 40% of 35-50 year olds have gotten some type of cosmetic procedure done to improve the way they look and feel about themselves.

As middle age starts rearing its ugly head, Generation X’ers aren’t taking it sitting down. With more aesthetic options available than ever before, it’s no wonder why the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has seen a surge in elective cosmetic procedures. I’m seeing the very same thing in my own office, as women are becoming more comfortable with the idea of body rejuvenation and skin treatments.

Which ones are the most popular, you ask? Most of my new patient consultations and completed treatments with Gen X’ers involve procedures like:

Breast Augmentation / Lifts / Reduction

You’re at the age where you know what you want. Maybe it’s finally having something to fill out your bra, or regain the confidence you had before “sagging” became a problem. You don’t have to be in your 20s to get your breasts fuller, higher, or the right shape and size. My Gen X female patients know that they’ll be with them for several more decades, and they’re taking steps to feel better about themselves in the future.

Tummy Tucks

Haven’t been able to get rid of that sagging belly skin since you had a baby or finally lost a few pounds? You’re not the only one. The stretching and swelling that your stomach experienced in younger years can really put a toll on your waistline – but a tummy tuck is an excellent fix!

Tummy Tuck Surgery Before and After

Liposuction

If diet and exercise haven’t caught up with your decreasing metabolism, liposuction is an excellent way to rid yourself of excessive fatty or cellulite tissues in those troublesome places that bother us all – love handles.

Eyelid Procedures

The delicate skin around your eye can be one of the first places to show signs of aging. Especially when you see yourself in photos or the mirror – and don’t expect to see what you’re looking at. An eyelid procedure, or blepharoplasty is a great way to erase signs of crow’s feet, circles under the eyes, or excessive wrinkling.

Mommy Makeovers

Our “mommy makeover” packages are extremely popular, especially for our late 30s and 40s women who are done having children. While a mommy makeover isn’t one procedure alone, it’s a combination of various treatments like breast augmentation, body contouring, and vaginal rejuvenation to help them get their entire body back to a slimmer, fitter, more youthful shape.

Somebody You Know Has Had Cosmetic Surgery

How many women are we talking about, here? Nearly 50%! Chances are, out of you and three other girlfriends, at least two of you have had aesthetic surgery. The procedures are becoming more advanced, less invasive, and help you get your younger body back with minimal down time.

Now’s Your Chance

Are you a Generation X’er who is starting to see time and life wear down parts of your body before you’re ready? Tired of seeing fine lines and wrinkles in the mirror each morning? Call to set up a complimentary, private consultation so that my team can help you feel better about the way you look and feel each day!

Candidates for Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation in El Paso, TXFor some women, having a smaller breast size than what is considered “ideal” can lead to a lack of confidence or dissatisfaction in appearance. If you wish your breasts were bigger, fuller and rounder, then you may wish to consider having a breast augmentation.

Before weighing the pros and cons, it is important to ask yourself why you feel the need to have bigger breasts. Breast augmentation is a very personalized procedure and should not be done to fulfill someone else’s requests (such as a lover or spouse). Rather, getting breast augmentation should be done after some self-reflection and not just to fit into any “ideal image” placed upon you by another person or by society.

Who is right for breast augmentation?

Breast Augmentation surgery is designed to help women increase the fullness, roundness and projection of their breasts. It is a great way to bring more balance and voluptuousness to your figure, which also improves self-confidence. For some women, hiding behind small breasts is associated with a poor self-esteem, the brunt of ridicule or simply not enjoying wearing certain wardrobe essentials that women with fuller breasts can. Evening gowns, bathing suits, low cut or revealing shirts, or even tight-fitting tops and sweaters can look better with augmented breasts.

You will be a good candidate for breast augmentation if you:

  • Have fully developed breasts
  • Are physically and mentally healthy
  • Feel like your breasts are too small
  • No longer like the shape of your breasts after aging, pregnancy or weight loss
  • Have breasts that are not the same shape or size
  • Have one or both breasts underdeveloped
  • Have realistic expectations

What breast procedures are commonly combined?

If you are looking for a gravity-defying experience, breast augmentation is not designed to improve severely sagging or drooping breasts. Instead, a breast lift may be needed in conjunction with a breast augmentation if you want to go for a lift and fullness at the same time. Depending on your surgeon, it may be so that you can have a breast lift performed on the same day as your breast augmentation procedure; this is something to discuss with your doctor.

Breast augmentation is sometimes combined with other procedures often termed a “Mommy Makeover.” This surgery includes a combination of breast augmentation and/or breast lift with a tummy tuck and/or liposuction. By combining both procedures during the same surgery, the patient benefits from a single recovery, whole body contour improvement, and a reduced cost compared to performing the procedures separately.

Increase in Plastic Surgery Countouring Procedures after massive Weight Loss

body contouring conceptA marked increase in the number of bariatric procedures in the United States has started affecting plastic surgery volumes according to the press release by the American Society of Plastic surgeons (ASPS). Body contouring procedures including abdominoplasty, thigh lifts, breast lifts and arm lifts grew at the fastest rate in 2014. The trend in growth is expected to continue.  In 2013 almost 500 bariatric procedures were performed every day in the United States.

Of the body contouring procedures, thigh lifts and arm lifts had the highest increase in five years, both up by 90%.  Nevertheless, abdominoplasties and mastopexy procedures continue to increase in volume as well. Having said this, Dr. Agullo believes that the main surgery performed in his practice after massive weight loss is the circumferential body lift or lower body lift.

After massive weight loss procedures patients experience an improvement in health, often curing related health problems such as diabetes and hypertension.    A large amount of weight loss does result in excess skin and other problems such as skin rashes and difficulties in mobility.  Oftentimes body contouring procedures after massive weight loss are key in the improvement of quality of life and part of the transformation of these patients.

At Southwest Plastic Surgery, Dr. Agullo specializes in multiple body contouring procedures,  or “total body lifts”, which can be combined in a single procedure.   Using the latest techniques and strict safety guidelines, Dr. Agullo is able to offer combinations of upper arm lifts, breast lifts, excision of back folds, circumferential abdominoplasties, thigh lifts, and face lifts in one setting. This can only be achieved by an experienced team.

Some of the procedures are covered by insurance due to the morbidity caused by the occurrence of skin infections in the infra-abdominal folds.   The most often covered procedure is panniculectomy, which removes the excess skin and tissue below the lower abdominal fold.

In 2014 approximately 45,000 patients underwent body-contouring procedures after massive weight loss in the United States. Dr. Agullo has noticed an increasing number of patients seeking body contouring procedures after massive weight loss at Southwest Plastic Surgery as well.    By offering both CareCredit and Alphaeon Credit, many patients are able to finance their procedures, thus making it more feasible.

If you or a loved have experienced massive weight loss and wish to improve your body contour give us a call today.

What Breast Procedure Do I Need?

Having small or misshapen breasts may leave you feeling less than confident in your body. Breast enhancement procedures can increase the size and correct the shape and position of your breasts. In today’s market, there are more ways than ever to gain the bigger, shapely bust you desire. Having options available to you helps ensure that you reach the aesthetic look you want and need.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation uses implants to achieve the size increase you desire. Saline or silicone implants are inserted through incisions into the breast pockets. You can choose subglandular (over the muscle) or subpectoral (under the muscle) placement depending on the look you wish to create with your augmentation. What Breast Procedure Do I Need?

Pros

  • Can produce a dramatic increase in breast size
  • Reliable results
  • Long-term enhancement
  • Achieves results with a single procedure (unless complications occur)

Cons

  • Uses synthetic material
  • May leave scarring

Natural Enhancement

Breast Fat transfer is a technique that has been perfected only fairly recently. Unwanted fat is harvested from trouble areas of the body such as the abdomen, hips, or thighs. The fat is purified and injected in layers into the breasts. Fat transfer is primarily for women seeking subtle enhancement. It can be used to reshape the breasts, and you can achieve a full cup size increase through one procedure.

Pros

  • Uses 100 percent biological material
  • Results look and feel natural
  • Fat reduction from other locations
  • Minimal scarring

Cons

  • Results vary from patient to patient
  • Multiple treatments may be necessary
  • Does not provide a dramatic size change

Breast Lift

Breast lifts are performed on women with mild to severe breast ptosis (sagging). Breast sagging can occur due to gravity, aging, pregnancy, or weight loss. Through incisions created around the nipples, excess tissue is removed, and what remains is sutured into place. This helps the breasts sit in a higher, more perky position on the chest.

Pros

  • Corrects sagging
  • Provides natural results
  • When combined with augmentation, helps prevent double-bubble deformity

Cons

  • Does not increase size
  • May result in visible scarring
  • Breast tissue is still subject to causes of sagging like future weight gain and pregnancy

Combining Procedures

You can choose to combine different breast procedures to gain the results you desire. Fat transfer can be utilized by women with thin breast tissue who desire implants. If the tissue is too thin, the outline of the implant may be visible through the skin. Transferring fat around the edges of the implant can help camouflage its outline.

Women who desire a size increase but also have tissue sagging should consider combining a lift with their augmentation. Lifting and securing the breast tissue around the implants helps prevent complications such as double-bubble deformity and bottoming out.

If you want to benefit from the confidence boost of breast enhancement, schedule your consultation with Dr. Agullo today.
