The playing field in cosmetic surgery patients is changing. As more men are realizing that cosmetic procedures are minimally to non-invasive, they are increasingly coming in for plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments. It may just be that in the future, just as many men are getting treatment as women. Last year, over 1 million men in the US saw a plastic surgeon for cosmetic treatment.
The fact that technology has made treatments more comfortable and affordable is a huge factor. But men are also realizing that it isn’t narcissistic or painful for them to ‘get work done.’ They’re just now figuring out what women have already known!
So, what are the top procedures I’m seeing men for at my El Paso cosmetic surgery center?
If you weren’t naturally well endowed with a full facial beard, that’s ok. It’s now possible to do single follicular hair transplants from the back of the head onto the face - leaving you with a fully functional beard! For men with baby faces or patchy facial hair, beard transplants are the perfect touch for getting that “lumberjack” or “metrosexual” look you’ve been working so hard toward. Plus, nobody has to know that you even had it done!
Laser Hair Removal
We’ve seen about a 40% increase in laser hair removal treatments in men. The results are permanent, and great for men who have excessive hair in less-than desirable areas, such as the back or even their chest.
Light, laser, and radio therapy can tighten the skin throughout the face, neck, stomach and legs for a smoother, more youthful skin tone. It’s perfect for erasing loose skin around the eyes and mouth - areas that show our age. Plus, it triggers collagen production which makes the skin look fuller and smoother.
Did you know that it was possible for us to use non-surgical techniques to reduce the appearance of body fat? Liposuction is also useful for men with excessive fatty tissue buildup (even in the breasts) for a more toned body contour that diet and exercise can’t always achieve on their own.
Whether it’s using lasers to firm and tighten the neck tissues or a surgical neck lift, tightening the skin in this area can add youth to your appearance. We also reduce fat through the area under the chin, which can make you look like you’ve lost weight. Sometimes I even add injectables to remove the fatty tissues underneath the skin.
Are you new to the dating crowd again? Just looking for a way to feel your best? Now you know the truth - I see men on a regular basis and the treatments available are usually far simpler than they realized!
If you’re considering doing something for yourself, whether it’s a beard transplant, liposuction, or laser therapy - I invite you to call my El Paso office to schedule a consultation. We’ll have a chance to sit and discuss what type of goals and expectations you have, and then go over your options available.

It is a common misconception that a facelift
is all you need to restore a youthful appearance. A facelift only corrects the lower portion of your face around the cheeks, jaws, and neck, but many signs of aging develop around the eyes and on the upper half of the face. To get a fully rejuvenated facial appearance, you should also consider a brow lift and/or an eyelid lift.
The procedure that will benefit you most ultimately depends on what you desire to correct on your face. Do drooping eyelids make you look constantly fatigued? Does a sagging brow make you appear worn out? Both are caused by the weakening of the underlying musculature that gravity pulls downwards, and each requires a different technique to correct.
Forehead wrinkles and a drooping brow can make you appear constantly angry, tired, or sad. These conditions develop over the years and can be exacerbated by sun exposure, smoking, and your natural facial movements. Brow lift
surgery is performed to lift the muscle structures and restore a smooth and youthful brow and forehead. One of many techniques may be utilized depending on your aesthetic goals.
- Temporal Brow Lift: focuses on creating a pleasing contour along the brow line.
- Forehead Lift: uses an endoscopic approach, which allows the muscles to be tightened through small incisions. This technique results in less swelling, bruising, and bleeding.
- Periorbital Rejuvenation: corrects brows that sag laterally rather than centrally or vertically.
- Coronal Brow Lift: utilizes incisions from one ear to the other within the hairline, which helps hide any resulting scarring.
- Direct Brow Lift: uses an incision near the brow and lifts the muscles.
Flabby, hooded eyelids can severely age the face. Eyelid lift
surgery corrects sagging eyelids as well as crow’s feet, upper and lower lid creases, puffiness, and dark undereye circles. Correcting the eyelids can brighten your whole facial appearance and can even correct impaired vision.
- Transconjunctival approach goes through the tear trough the reach the underlying muscles of the lower lid.
- Transcutaneous approach accesses the muscle structure through an incision in the skin.
- Fat lipolysis removes excess fat from the lower eyelid.
- Erbium YAG lasers offer non-invasive treatment to correct crow’s feet and wrinkles around the eyes.
For many patients, it isn’t just one area of the face that has signs of aging. When multiple areas need to be corrected, you can combine procedures to save time and money. Brow and eyelid lifts can be combined to rejuvenate the entire upper portion of the face. If you desire a full facial rejuvenation, consider combining both techniques with a facelift, which targets the lower half of your face.

A lot of patients who come in to Southwest Plastic Surgery ask how young (or old) you need to be to get a facelift. These days, “40 is the new 30” and more people want to look younger, and with less effort. Dr. Frank Agullo is our board-certified plastic surgeon and does amazing transformations, yet with so many non-invasive cosmetic procedures on the market today, his answer may surprise you.
Very often, Dr. Frank Agullo may recommend waiting to undergo facelift plastic surgery until a patient creeps over the middle age mark, rather than doing it at a younger age of 40 or less.
Facelifts used to be one of the Top 5 cosmetic procedures in the United States, but they are no longer on the Top 5 list.
Now there are new opportunities for people in the 40-ish crowd. Nonsurgical options such as injectables, Dermaglow LED therapy, chemical peels, Ultherapy and microdermabrasion make it possible to achieve a youthful appearance without the need for surgery. Many of these newer methods represent the most cutting-edge of cosmetic enhancements, with a remarkable ability to remove fine lines, sun spots, acne scars and to fill in the facial imperfections. Although not always a permanent solution, the effects do last a long time, meaning a patient can now wait longer to undergo facelift surgery.
However, if a patient does experience sagging skin, double chin or baggy eyelids that are often part of the aging process, they may find that getting a facelift is the best solution. There is no right or wrong age to get a facelift, but it really depends on a patient’s overall health, desired results, and how extensive they want the transformation to be.
If you want to find out whether you are a good candidate for a facelift, or possibly for one of the numerous non-invasive procedures now available, it is best to seek a consultation with Dr. Agullo. He will give you his most honest, forthright perspective and show you the outcome on a revolutionary 3D Vectra Imaging System, which will give you confidence that you are making the right decision. When it comes to the aging process, hollowed or sunken-in cheeks rank right up there with turkey necks and droopy eyebrows. Fortunately there is now a simple way to instantly add volume to the cheek area - and without the time and expense of surgery!
Juvederm Voluma XC, the first and only Hyaluronic Acid (HA) filler approved by the FDA to address this issue, is an injectable gel that subtly lifts and contours your cheeks to help you recapture your youthful profile. Hyaluronic Acid is a natural anti-aging substance in the body that supports cell growth and repair. As we age, the body reduces its production of this precious material. Used cosmetically by an experienced physician, HA builds up collagen in the cell tissues and helps the skin retain water, temporarily plumping up the skin and smoothing out wrinkles.
What Results Can I Expect?
When used optimally, Juvederm Voluma XC has been clinically proven to last up to two years.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Side effects are moderate and can include itching, tenderness, firmness, swelling, bruising, pain, redness, and lumps or bumps at the site of injection. These reactions are temporary and generally disappear within two to four weeks. Most patients are able to resume their normal activities 24 hours after receiving the injection.
Dr. Agullo can help you restore your cheeks to their more youthful appearance. To find out more and schedule a consultation, please contact Southwest Plastic Surgery at (915) 590-7900.
