Does Plastic Surgery Change Your Personality?

Does Plastic Surgery Change Your Personality?

Nowadays, you can change virtually anything about your appearance, from your face, stomach, breasts, butt, hips, thighs, and many other modifications to your heart’s desire. These alterations may make you feel better about yourself, but can they change your personality? Plastic Surgery Changes Your PersonalityStudies show that yes, plastic surgery can change your personality because it can help you feel better about you self. Changing your appearance transcends to greater confidence, thereby making you feel sexier, younger, and more sociable, desirable, and even likeable. It is not necessarily because of the difference in your looks, but rather the difference in how you feel about your looks. People who feel self-conscious about their looks may be more introverted, shy, or keep to themselves, whereas people with a higher self-esteem (even if looks are less desirable) are often more likeable. These findings were expressed by researchers at the University of California in Santa Barbara, who found that people who believed they were attractive were also more socially accepted than those who picked apart their own faults and flaws. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Agullo has seen these results first hand. Patients who have undergone breast augmentations, liposuction, Mommy Makeovers, or facelifts return to his office feeling so much better about themselves, which helps them get more dates or more friends. Instead of sticking out like a sore thumb, patients report feeling energized, more dynamic, and yes, likeable. Anxiety is another reason that people often seek plastic surgery to improve their appearance. It makes perfect sense that if you feel dissatisfied about an aspect of your body, such as your stomach or breasts, you might try to hide those features. Hence, plastic surgery can not only correct the way those body parts look to you, they can also correct the anxiety you “feel” about those flaws in yourself. So the answer as to whether plastic surgery changes your personality or not is an astounding YES! Improving your confidence and self-esteem is just one of the positive side effects that are unexpectedly welcome after undergoing plastic surgery. And this boost in confidence and self-esteem can positively permeate all areas of your life. If you are considering plastic surgery, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Agullo. Are Ear Gauges Ruining Your Career?

Come Get Your Earlobes Fixed!

Ear Gauge Repair in Las Cruces, NMWhat might have seemed “cool” to do as a teen or young person often has heavy consequences, and getting a good paying job if you have ear gauges are one of those mistakes. Bands and Hollywood trendsetters often set the stage for what the latest styles and punk rockers are doing. However, young people don’t often think about how this might affect their ability to get into the workforce after high school or college. Another thing that young people don’t think about is that things like ear gauges are more or less a fad. Would it still seem cool to have giant holes in your ears at the age of forty, fifty, sixty, or retirement age? Most likely not, if your earlobes even make it that long without tearing. Your earlobes are just soft skin and tissue with no cartilage, which is why they can stretch so far. Ear gauges come in various sizes and degrees, from a few millimeters to inches, which makes your earlobes vulnerable and easy to tear. The size of ear gauge you can get greatly depends on your earlobe tissue and whether you have enough to accommodate such large holes. However, studies show that employers frown upon ear gauges and may even require them to be removed if they offer you a job. This is especially true in military and field work occupations and related more to safety.

Can Ear Gauges Be Repaired?

The solution is ear gauge repair, which is surprisingly simple. Dr. Agullo is a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs many ear gauge repairs. Earlobe gauge repair is often a very simple outpatient procedure that can cost anywhere between $1,000 to $2,000, depending on the size of the holes and the patient’s body type and structure. If you are considering ear gauge repair in the Southwest, Dr. Agullo cautions that you should quit smoking at least a couple of weeks prior to the repair. Dr. Agullo performs ear gauge repair surgery using local anesthesia, and you can return to your normal activities within one to two weeks after the procedure. Instead of being denied employment or military enrollment, talk to board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Agullo of Southwest Plastic Surgery. He can discuss the technique, cost, and recommendations before you make a decision as to whether ear gauge repair is right for you. To schedule your consultation with Dr. Frank Agullo, contact Southwest Plastic Surgery by calling our El Paso office at 915-590-7900 or our Las Cruces office at 575-520-5041. What to Do if You Tear Your Earlobe?

Surgery to Repair Torn or Stretched EarlobesMost often, torn earlobes occur due to either too-heavy jewelry worn in the earlobe or through accidental tearing caused by an incident. It can happen suddenly and unexpectedly. One minute you may be playing with your children and the next, your earring gets ripped out right through the earlobe tissue. A split that occurs in your earlobe may seem unattractive and unsightly. It can make you feel self-conscious. Sometimes, the earlobes are not completely torn, but the earring holes are stretched and seem to be close to impending doom. Your earlobes are comprised of fatty tissue and soft skin, which makes them a good place for piercing. Some people have small earlobes while others have medium to large sizes; this is why men and women choose varying degrees of size when it comes to earrings they prefer wearing. The dangly or heavy earrings are more dangerous to your earlobe, although millions of people love to wear them. Your earlobes’ soft tissues may not be strong enough for some larger earrings, and especially if you wear them over a long period of time, the earlobe can become more vulnerable to tears or stretching.

What Can Be Done to Fix Split Earlobes?

You may think that your earlobe can repair itself, but this is not generally the case. Transparent tape might be your best attempt at a creative solution, but your skin could experience an adverse reaction. Dr. Frank Agullo is a board-certified plastic surgeon who helps patients with torn earlobes by performing earlobe repair surgery. Using a gentle, safe technique and modern tools, Dr. Agullo’s delicate earlobe repair technique has helped hundreds of patients to restore their earlobes with minimal to no evidence of there ever being a tear. During your consultation, Dr. Agullo will assess your earlobe and discuss the technique he will use to repair your earlobe. The technique he uses to repair your earlobe will depend on the type and severity of your tear. The good news is that earlobe tear repair can be done with just local anesthesia right in Dr. Agullo’s office, without having to endure any pain or hospitalization. Dr. Agullo makes a small mark on the patient’s earlobe and applies numbing lidocaine to the area, so you will not feel anything during the earlobe repair procedure. During the procedure, Dr. Agullo starts by removing the damaged scar tissue and then begins to work on rebuilding the damage. To repair the earlobe, Dr. Agullo uses either a zigzag or straight repair, similar to “stitching” up a hem on a piece of clothing. Some tears occur in a straight line down while others may rip a good portion of the earlobe, requiring extra care and stitching. He uses very fine threads to repair the earlobe that, after they heal, will eventually disappear if you continue to apply the scar therapy cream after the earlobe repair procedure has been completed.

Can I Ever Wear Earrings Again?

You should wait at least a couple of months after earlobe repair surgery before considering getting your earlobe re-pierced. We recommend that you stick to the smaller “stud” earrings, rather than attempting any heavy or dangly earrings again, especially if you have small children. They love shiny things and sometimes have a tendency to pull on earrings, which accounts for a large majority of earlobe tears. Dr. Agullo can re-pierce your ears once they are healed. Other reasons for earlobe repair might be due to earlobe abnormalities, traumas or accidents, hereditary defects, or intentional changes when a patient gets large earrings due to body art. If you have any questions about earlobe repair surgery in the Southwest, schedule your consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Agullo today by calling our El Paso office at 915-590-7900 or our Las Cruces office at 575-520-5041. Not So Commonly Asked Questions About Breast Fat Injections

Breast Augmentation Using Fat InjectionsRecently, Dr. Agullo received a great email from a prospective client in Canada interested in breast augmentation with fat grafting. She did not want to have breast augmentation with implants and had additional questions not covered on the website. Dr. Agullo performs surgeries of all kinds – not only for patients throughout Southwest Texas, El Paso, Mexico, and Las Cruces, NM – but also for a number of fly-ins from all over North America, Asia, and Europe. This is a special privilege.

Dr. Agullo has taken care to write all the content for his website himself to describe the most important aspects of breast augmentation using fat injections. To answer many questions about fat injections for women who want fuller breasts, here are answers to some not so frequently asked questions.

1. Who administers the anesthetic, and are they board certified? Is it local or general? Can it be local? For breast fat transfer procedures, Dr. Agullo performs the surgery at a certified outpatient surgery center, which includes a free overnight stay for his out-of-town patients. Dr. Agullo’s team includes a board-certified anesthesiologist and nurse anesthetist, who will take care of the patient with the utmost care and attention to detail. The procedure is done under general anesthesia to optimize fat harvesting volume. 2. What type of liposuction do you use to remove the fat for fat transfer to the breast? How does this keep the fat viable? Power-assisted, tumescent liposuction is the gold standard. This is the least traumatic method for the cells. Other types of liposuction, such as Vaser and Smartlipo™, generate heat that can injure and destroy the fat cells. 3. What is your complication rate? Are blood clots an issue? It might seem unrealistic, but close to 0%. Infections and blood clots are extremely rare in a healthy patient. The most likely complication is fatty necrosis, which could result in palpable small masses, but Dr. Agullo doesn't commonly see that with his delicate, micro-injection technique. 4. When you state the range for the procedure is between $4,000 - $7,000, what increases the price or decreases it? The base cost includes one area of liposuction. In most patients, Dr. Agullo performs liposuction in multiple areas. Out-of-town patients are welcome to send pictures of themselves to get an exact cost, as well as recommendations. At Southwest Plastic Surgery, we are accustomed to consulting and treating out of town patients. Dr. Agullo can consult with you via telephone, or even better, face-to-face using FaceTime or Skype. Patients who live locally within the El Paso, TX or Las Cruces, NM areas are welcome to come in for a consultation. During your consultation, Dr. Agullo can determine how much work is needed to accomplish your goals as well as an exact cost. Another advantage Dr. Agullo's patients receive is the ability to get a Vectra 3D imaging preview of “before” and “after” pictures. 5. Is the price all inclusive, including garments? Yes, we provide you with the exact cost for everything you need from preoperative vitamins to post-operative care. 6. Do you recommend lymphatic massage to the lipo areas? Yes, Southwest Plastic Surgery of El Paso and Southwest Plastic Surgery of Las Cruces have a massage therapist on site to provide lymphatic drainage treatments. If a patient is from away, this will be done as frequently as possible until the patient leaves town. Please refer to the article about the benefits of lymphatic massage. 7. Do you use drains? No; they are not necessary. 8. Having done this procedure, how many patients have complained of lumpiness or calcification afterward? None. 9. When injecting fat into the breast, how are you careful not to hit any veins? Is that a concern? Dr. Agullo uses blunt, microinjection cannulas, which are extremely unlikely to perforate veins or arteries. Nevertheless, a patient may still get bruising after the procedure. People have different concerns, and understandably so. Any time a surgery is performed, women want to be well informed before committing to any major undertaking, especially if they are mothers who want to ensure their wellbeing in order to care for their child. Breast fat injections are fairly straightforward in the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon. If you have any question regarding breast augmentation using fat injections, we encourage you to contact us at our El Paso office at (915) 590-7900 or our Las Cruces office at (575) 520-5041 today. Feel free to email Dr. Agullo directly, and he will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Three Unknown Physical Benefits of Tummy Tucks

Benefits of Tummy TucksMore and more frequently, women are turning to plastic surgery to help them regain their pre-baby shape or after large amounts of weight loss to remove excess skin and to restore their figures. Tummy tucks are not gender exclusive; many men have also sought the tummy tuck as a solution for eliminating or decreasing those spare tires and love handles. If you’re considering it, you’re not alone. For a lot of people in America, the most wanted surgery is a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty. The proof is in the numbers; according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons between 2000 and 2014 the number of tummy tuck procedures increased 87%! Most people are familiar with the outer physical benefits, the creation of a flatter and toned mid-section, improved waistline, and elimination of stretch marks. What’s not usually known are these three physical benefits that can be achieved with a tummy tuck:
  • Reduction of Urinary Incontinence – Some women develop Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI), or bladder control issues, after a vaginal birth. While most patients are treated with a specific SUI surgery, it has been noted that the incontinence is often resolved after an abdominoplasty.
  • Tightened Abdominal Muscles– An additional benefit to a tummy tuck has been seen when the abdominal muscles are tightened. Not only is the mid-section visually flatter, but a lot of patients experience significantly better standing and seated posture. The tightening of these muscles and better posture can also sometimes lead to the relief of back pain associated with a weak core or incorrect posture. The tightened abdominal muscles also contribute to a smaller intra-abdominal space, with patients experiencing fullness with smaller amounts of food intake, which contributes to weight maintenance or even weight loss.
  • Benefits of Tummy TucksVentral Hernia Correction if Needed – Many times patients experience ventral hernias associated with abdominal weakness. This can be caused by a multitude of factors including but not limited to extreme weight loss, C-sections, appendectomies, multiple pregnancies, etc. If you’ve been diagnosed with a ventral hernia, it might be worth speaking with your doctor about adding an abdominoplasty to strengthen the abdominal wall and prevent any future hernia occurrences.
Though the tummy tuck is increasingly popular in men and women, it’s important to take several steps to educate yourself before committing to the procedure. Knowing as much as possible about the actual surgery and recovery is very important for your health, your life schedule, and to help your family plan accordingly. Therefore, here are some important things you should know about tummy tuck surgery:
  • The procedure is still a major operation.
  • The surgery lasts, on average, two to three hours.
  • You will be under an anesthetic during the procedure.
  • You can expect your recovery time to take several weeks.
  • You will need to refrain from heavy lifting, quick movement etc., for a period of time after your surgery.

Wait at Least Six Months After Having a Baby to Get a Mommy Makeover

Mommy Makeover El Paso Las CrucesMore than ever women are focused on their bodies, especially after pregnancy. The comparisons not only begin with friends and family but also can be exacerbated by the media stories of the rich and famous. Of course, no one notes the private chefs, coaches, etc. that they have at their disposal. A lot of women tend to put pressure on themselves to quickly get back to pre-pregnancy shape, often not considering all their bodies have done to prepare them for childbirth. During your pregnancy, not only do your hormones change, but your body changes shape to allow your baby to grow healthily and be delivered. Your mid-section stretches, your breasts increase in size, and certain areas may even swell due to retaining water. Once your pregnancy is over and hormones return to normal, your skin and muscles will begin to tighten once again. How much a woman's body will return to "normal" varies from person to person and depends on her overall health, diet, and exercise plan. There are a large number of women who find no matter what they do physically and with their diets, they simply can’t get back to their pre-pregnancy shape. There may be loose skin around the midsection and potentially sagging breasts once milk production has ceased.

What Is A Mommy Makeover?

Usually a “Mommy Makeover” includes a tummy tuck, liposuction in the mid-section and hips, and either a breast lift, reduction, or augmentation, depending on the woman's specific needs. In Dr. Agullo’s practice, mommy makeovers often include buttock enhancement via a Brazilian Butt Lift with fat injections or a buttock implant. It’s important to note that the procedures are not intended to speed weight loss, they are to help with areas that diet and exercise simply cannot alter.

How Long Should You Wait?

From birth, this can be several months to a couple years, depending on your family, feeding, diet, and exercise plan. However, it’s never recommended to have a tummy tuck before you are done with childbearing. This is to prevent you from having to redo surgeries in the future. The most important thing to remember is that your body is different from everyone else’s. Your body will heal and return at a different rate and shape than others. Discussing your body goals with your physician can help create a plan with attainable goals that can then be further defined with surgery if desired. When you are ready, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Agullo of Southwest Plastic Surgery in El Paso and Las Cruces can help you prepare for a Mommy Makeover. Call our office in El Paso (915) 590-7900 or our office in Las Cruces at (575) 520-5041 to schedule your consultation. We encourage you to come in and see our before and after pictures even before you make a decision.
