The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has released their 2014 plastic surgery statistics report. Although there has been much media attention related to increased cosmetic procedures in male patients within the last few years, it was surprising to see that pectoral implants have made it into the highest growing plastic surgery procedure last year increasing by 208% compared to 2013.
Male pectoral implants is a procedure performed in males who desire fuller upper torso with improved pectoral contour. Oftentimes, patients seeking this procedure are already in good shape, lean, and fit, but are unable to attain a decided pectoral contour. Male pectoral implants are the solution in these cases.
The surgery is performed through a transaxillary incision (small 5 cm incision in the axilla) and the implants placed are solid silicone implants. These implants do not have the risk of rupture and should last a lifetime. The scarring is minimal and oftentimes unnoticeable. The procedure usually takes about one hour under general anesthesia or IV sedation, and patients usually return to normal activity within five days. Exercise can be resumed three weeks later.
Patients see a marked difference after undergoing pectoral implant surgery and the satisfaction rate is very high. Many patients opt to combine these procedures with liposuction for further body contour.
If you have any questions regarding pectoral implants or are ready to schedule a consultation, don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Frank Agullo, board certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Agullo is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. ASPS member surgeons are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons and trained specifically on plastic surgery. The society we live in calls for vanity and pride in one’s appearance, but not just for women. Men no longer have to be ashamed to seek the services of a plastic surgeon, whereas at one time it was more taboo for men to get nipped and tucked. Some plastic surgeons are now dedicating an entirely separate website just for their male clients, but it does not stop there.
Just to give you an idea of how popular this trend has become, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reported an increase in the number of male patients has grown by 106% from 1997 to 2012.
Why Is This a Growing Trend?
In El Paso, TX, Dr. Frank Agullo sees a lot more men through the doors of Southwest Plastic Surgery than ever, in part because of popular TV shows that make it more accepted for men to preserve their health and reverse the evident signs of aging.
“Men want to maintain confidence just as much as women, but for men, keeping a great appearance has to do with professional success and preserving a youthful look.” –Dr. Frank Agullo
This is especially true for middle aged men who may be going through a divorce or who are planning to attend a class reunion. They want to look good, not only for the opposite sex but to turn back the hands of time in the presence of classmates who have seen them at their best. Nothing boosts a guy’s self-esteem more than going to a class reunion only to hear people say, “Whoa, you haven’t aged a bit!”
And why not? Men should not be excluded from bettering themselves and dipping into the proverbial fountain of youth.
What Types of Cosmetic Procedures are Popular among Men?
• Hair Transplants
• Liposuction/Tummy Tucks
• Rhinoplasty/Nose Jobs
• Facelifts or Laser Treatments
• Pec Implants
Some plastic surgery facilities throughout the U.S. have responded to the popularity of “Mommy Makeovers” with “Daddy Do-Overs”, which is a nickname for cosmetic procedures for men that can include a tummy tuck or liposuction, jawline contouring, eyelift, and perhaps facial rejuvenation to remove fine lines and wrinkles. Hair transplants with grafting have also grown in popularity. Men want to achieve a more athletic appearance and can get pectoral implants, where traditionally it was only females who received breast augmentations with implants. This gives men a more defined, body-builder profile.

Many men strive to have a chest that is firm and muscular. However, even after extensively working out, some men are unable to develop their pectoral muscles to a size that is satisfying to them. Fortunately, cosmetic surgery can improve the appearance of the chest and make a man feel more masculine. At his El Paso plastic surgery practice, Dr. Agullo performs pectoral implant surgery
for men of all ages.
The most common reasons for undergoing pectoral implant surgery are to:
- Increase the size of the chest
- Increase the projection of the chest
- Correct a sunken or hollowed chest (pectus excavatum)
- Improve self-esteem
This procedure is performed in an outpatient setting with either intravenous conscious sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s preference. Incisions are strategically placed in the armpits along the edge of the pectoral muscles, through which the implants are inserted into the chest. Dr. Agullo uses solid elastomer implants that come in different sizes and shapes to meet the patient’s desired results. Sometimes liposuction
or pectoral etching are also needed to remove excess fat deposits and attain the best possible outcome.
After pectoral surgery, most patients wear an elastic vest or bandage to help reduce swelling. Some discomfort is expected during the first week, and patients should get plenty of rest and fluids. Most patients return to work in about two weeks, but they should avoid exercising for at least six weeks.
Pectoral implant surgery is a very rewarding procedure that has long-lasting results. Men feel more confident about their overall appearance and no longer feel self-conscious about taking their shirt off in front others.
