Mother or Daughter? A Facelift Almost Ten Years Later

October 13, 2026 | Facelift, Facial Procedures

Black and white composite portrait joining half of a mother's face and half of her daughter's face down the midline, both with long wavy hair. The mother had a facelift with Frank Agullo, MD, FACS almost ten years earlier. Shared with permission.

Can you tell which side is Mom?

Here is the twist I gave on Instagram today: “Mom is 23 years older than her daughter, and I performed her facelift almost 10 years ago!”

Half of one face. Half of the other. Same hair, same light, one line down the middle.

“A great facelift isn’t about looking different. It’s about looking like a younger version of yourself, even years later!”

Why the Test Works

It only works if the surgery never changed who she is. That is the whole point of a deep plane lift.

“It’s just gonna be a younger version of yourself. You’re gonna look more energetic, probably to match the way you feel. But it’s not gonna be that blown in the wind. It’s still a deep plane facelift, so I am pulling the deeper structures. We’re not pulling on the skin, that’s what gives that pulled look.”

When a patient tells me she is afraid of losing her features, I ask her about her old photos.

“It’s still going to be you. It’s going to be completely you, just a younger version. I’m sure if you look at your older photos, your cheeks were up a little bit higher, you didn’t have this fullness here, and your brows were probably up a little bit higher too. So it is just setting the clock back.”

Her daughter’s face is the old photo.

How Long Does a Facelift Last?

“It’s still a deep plane facelift. So it lasts about seven to ten years.”

Lasting is not the same as stopping time.

“And of course, it’s like starting over. We go back twenty years, and then aging continues, but it’s going to give you a pretty long-lasting result. This is a deep plane lift, so it looks natural. It’s still going to be you. You’re going to look fresher, more energetic, less tired.”

Lock In Your Younger Self

This is the part of the consult most patients do not expect.

“You’re 52, and we go back ten years. So you’re going to look like you’re 40. And then you’re going to start over. So you keep aging, and then in about ten years we would do a touch up, and we bring you back ten years. So you’re still 40. So in your sixties, you’re going to look 40. That’s why we’re doing them earlier and earlier. Because we can kind of freeze you at a much younger age.”

“We kind of lock in the younger age, and then ten years go by, and we do a touch-up, and we get you back to that. It’s a good idea, because if we do it when you’re seventy years old, we can only make you look sixty.”

That is why my patients keep getting younger.

“I think the deep plane lift and the endoscopic deep plane lift are great procedures, which create very natural and long-lasting results, and we’re seeing patients completely avoid the noninvasive procedures and go straight to the surgical procedures early on.”
