Neck Lift

Either due to sun or age, reverse the effects of a sagging neck to revitalize your appearance.  Reclaim a youthful affect and enhance your self esteem.

Oh, the dreaded double chin

Also known as the “turkey neck” or turkey wattle, neck baggage, fatty jowls, and a number of other undesirable terms. When people age, the neck is one of the body parts that shows its age faster than others. This can be attributed to the loss of skin elasticity under the neck and chin. Neck bands start to appear when the platysmal muscle thickens and becomes cord-like, which can lead to unwanted characteristics of sagging or neck bands that are similar to turkey necks.

Yet, whether your neck flab is affected by genetics, age, the harshness of the sun or just by the negative effects of gravity, getting a platysmaplasty (neck lift) or neck contouring cosmetic enhancement can be a great solution.

A neck lift involves removal of the excess skin that sags down underneath your chin and jawline. The adjustments can be as simple as the tightening of platysma muscle that has begun to sag and separate from your face, or it might be more extensive by removing excess fatty tissue through liposuction techniques. Chin liposuction could also be enough to make your neck appear smoother and less saggy.

It’s important to notice whether or not you are a good candidate for neck lift surgery. If you feel self-conscious about the appearance of your neck, the platysmaplasty could be a strong consideration.

Neck Lift Techniques

Throughout Southwestern TX, New Mexico and northern Mexico, Dr. Frank Agullo specializes in neck lifts. He is double board certified both in Plastic Surgery and General Surgery to give his patients the peace of mind that their neck contouring procedures will be done accurately.

First, the surgeon and his staff will administer an IV to deliver fluids and medication. You’ll be hooked up to a monitor to track your surgery progress and vitals while in neck lift surgery. Most patients opt for general anesthesia, in which case Dr. Agullo’s team has the area’s leading anesthesiologist at their disposal. Patients do have a choice if they prefer a local anesthesia or sedation instead of going completely under, however this is something you can discuss during the initial consultation.

There are a few different techniques used to do the neck lift procedure.

  • Skin-only technique: The surgeon makes two small incisions just behind your ear or underneath it. Then he loosens and re-drapes the skin before removing the baggy extra skin, and sometimes there may be a need for a tiny incision just underneath the chin. While in there, the surgeon may need to remove some of the platysma muscle or fatty tissue while rearranging and tightening the remaining muscle. This gives your neck and throat a firm look. He may finish the procedure with mesh, sutures or bandages to get rid of the turkey chin.
  • Neck liposuction: Another treatment for neck band cosmetic correction is getting liposuction in the lower face, neck and chin. The liposuction is done with a precise tool and pinpoints specific areas of fat removal.
  • Combo Lipo & Skin Removal: This variant combines skin removal and the liposuction together to smooth and contour the neck.

Dr. Agullo’s will then close the incisions to complete the neck lift enhancement procedure. Most of the time this type of cosmetic surgery is done as an outpatient operation and you will not be required to stay overnight. The doctor will get you properly bandaged and will keep you in the recovery room for observation for a few hours until it is safe to be released. You should always have cosmetic surgery in a board certified and accredited facility, such as that of Dr. Agullo’s practice in El Paso.

Combined neck lift procedures

Neck lift surgery is often done at the same time with other facial corrective surgeries to maximize time, money and healing. It also yields better results when done in conjunction with a related procedure, such as a facelift to fix lower and mid-face sagging, or with a brow lift to correct sad and tired eyes, or with a chin implant to improve the jawline appearance, as well as other types of cosmetic enhancements. You can ask your doctor if this is right for your particular concerns and circumstances. These are commonly applied surgeries that can be grouped together if you are in good health and a qualified candidate:

  • Facelift (Rhytidectomy)
  • Blepharoplasty
  • Rhinoplasty
  • Chin Augmentation
  • Fat Injections

Getting ready for neck lift surgery

Prepare for your surgery by:

  • Not eating or drinking after midnight on the night before the neck lift.
  • Preparing with medical supplies and ice packs at your home.
  • Finding someone to drive you to and from the procedure.
  • Quitting smoking at least two weeks prior.
  • Don’t use any makeup, lotions, or creams on your face, chin or neck.
  • Asking for enough time off from work to recover.

Depending on any combined procedures you may be undertaking, the surgeon will be performing your neck lift within one to two hours. You’ll be under general anesthesia or IV conscious sedation. You won’t remember a thing with either method and you will wake up with some tenderness, soreness, a feeling of a stiff jaw and swelling or bruising.

Recovering from a neck lift

Dr. Agullo will apply medically approved bandages on your neck, chin, and near the incisions behind your ears. These should be kept on your neck for a couple of days or per his recommendation. Plan on your neck and chin feeling painful, sore, tender and tight. Some people want to eat a liquid diet for a couple of days, such as milkshakes or soups. If you desire, the postoperative discomfort can be eased with some prescribed medications.

Your neck may bleed for a few days, which is normal. However, if excessive bleeding occurs, tell the doctor immediately. Remember that healing takes time and the swelling will need to go down on its own. Avoid social activities while your neck heals. The swelling may be unsightly for a while.

Within a few weeks, your neck will heal and look smooth again. Even better… your double chin and turkey neck will be gone!
