Breast Augmentation

Some women with breasts that are too small, misshapen, or asymmetrical feel robbed of their confidence and lack satisfaction with their appearance. Breast augmentation surgery can increase breast size, provide a more pleasing breast contour, and correct asymmetry. Women who undergo breast augmentation surgery find that they feel more comfortable and confident in their own skin.

Do you...

  • Look in the mirror and lack confidence because you feel that your breasts are flat, too small, or disproportionate to the rest of your figure?
  • Feel uncomfortable in certain tops, dresses, and swimsuits because your breasts don’t fill them out properly?
  • Feel embarrassed by your breast size when getting intimate with your partner?

Breast Augmentation Techniques

In our office, we utilize the Vectra 3D imaging system to provide patients the opportunity to visualize their results before surgery. This technology creates a 3D image of your body that can be altered to simulate the look of various implant types and sizes. This helps patients make a more accurate decision on which implant they should choose for their procedure.

Breast Augmentation With Implants

  • Most common type of breast augmentation
  • Greater range of size selection
  • Less degree of breast size change with changes in overall body weight
  • Can be performed in all patients

Breast Augmentation With Fat Grafting

  • Breast Fat Injection
  • Most natural appearance
  • No need for implants
  • Limited to an increase in one to two cup sizes in a single procedure
  • May require multiple procedures
  • Redistributes fat from unwanted areas

Implant Profile

silicone
The profile of the implant refers to the amount of projection it provides.
  • Types of profiles include:
    • Moderate (style 10 or L)
    • Moderate Plus (style 15 or M)
    • High (style 20 or F)
    • Extra High (style 45 or X)
  • The higher the profile, the more projection and the narrower the implants are.
  • For most breast augmentations, either a Moderate Plus or a High projection is chosen.
  • The basis for the ideal implant includes selecting an implant that closely matches your breast width.
  • A higher profile implant allows for smaller women to use a larger implant.
  • A low profile implant allows bigger women to use a smaller implant.

Incision Locations

The incision is made in the armpit, and an endoscope aids in the insertion of the implant.

The incision is made around the lower portion of the areola where it meets with the normal breast skin.

The incision is made in the breast fold where the lower breast tissue meets the chest wall.

Preparing for Your Surgery

Proper planning and preparation can help you have a quicker and smoother recovery process. Some things you should do to prepare for your surgery include:
  • Line up a family member or friend to drive you home after your procedure
  • Ensure you have your paperwork and your ID
  • Don’t eat or drink after midnight the day prior to your scheduled procedure
  • Don’t use lotions, creams, or makeup on your skin the day of your procedure
  • Wear a loose-fitting shirt that buttons up because it may be difficult to slip one over your head after the procedure
  • Stop smoking for at least two weeks prior to your surgery and for two weeks after to lower your risk of blood clots and other complications
  • Don’t take medication that will thin your blood for two weeks before your procedure

Breast Augmentation FAQ

arrowWhat makes your breast augmentation experience different with Dr. Frank Agullo?
  • Dr. Agullo is a double board-certified plastic surgeon
  • Availability of Vectra 3D imaging system to facilitate implant selection
  • Option of using either general anesthesia or conscious sedation
  • Use of the Keller funnel for a “no touch” technique to decrease risk of infection and capsular contracture
  • Use of triple antibiotic solution to decrease risk of infection and capsular contracture
  • Use of Exparel to provide ongoing anesthesia for up to 72 hours after your procedure
arrowWhat type of sedation will be used during my procedure?

You will have the choice between:

  • Conscious sedation: Patients receive intravenous anesthesia but continue to breathe without the need for intubation. They remain comfortable throughout the procedure. The benefits include quicker recovery, less nausea or vomiting, fewer headaches, and lower cost.
  • General anesthesia: Patients have no awareness during their procedure. This is ideal for patients who prefer to be completely asleep during the procedure.
arrowWhat possible complications are associated with breast augmentation surgery?

Other than the possible surgical complications, including bleeding and infection, breast augmentation risks include:

  • Undesirable scars
  • Capsular contracture
  • Implant rupture or leakage
  • Temporary or permanent changes in breast sensation (specifically the nipples)
  • Stretch marks
  • Hemorrhages or blood clots
  • Double-bubble deformity
  • Visible implant rippling
arrowWhat is the average recovery time after breast augmentation surgery?

Most patients can return to normal activity within 24 hours. During the initial week, your breasts will be bruised and swollen. Over the next few weeks, your breasts will be slightly swollen and feel tender. The average recovery time to return to full activity, including exercise, following breast augmentation is four to six weeks.

arrowHow much does breast augmentation surgery cost?

The cost of your procedure varies depending on geographic location, surgeon fees, facility fees, anesthesia fees, implant type, and incision type. Breast augmentation typically costs anywhere between $5,000 - $8,000.

arrowWhere will my implants be placed?

Dr. Agullo will help you determine the best location for your implants depending on your breast characteristics and objectives. Implants can be placed in either of the following locations:

  • Subglandular: Below the breast tissue but on top of the pectoral muscle. Implants placed here provide a rounder, more prominent projection, but the implants may be more palpable.
  • Subpectoral: Below the breast tissue and under the pectoral muscle. This gives the breast a more natural slope. It also decreases the risk of capsular contracture. Subpectoral placement is also known as “under the muscle” or “dual plane” breast augmentation.
arrowWhat size implant should I have?

Dr. Agullo will help you choose the best implant for your dimensions and objectives. This is a highly personalized approach facilitated with the use of the Vectra 3D system and special sizer system available at Southwest Plastic Surgery.
