What Gynecomastia Surgery Actually Costs in El Paso (And Why the Number Moves)

Almost every gynecomastia consultation opens the same way. A patient sits down, and before we’ve even talked about what’s actually going on with his chest, he asks how much this is going to cost. I understand why. Men shop for this procedure online more than almost any other I perform, and most of what they find is a single flat number that doesn’t hold up once I actually examine them.

Here’s the honest version. Our starting price for gynecomastia surgery is $7,050, and it is genuinely all-inclusive: anesthesia, the surgical facility, pre-op medical testing, compression garments, and recovery products are all built in, with only prescription medications billed separately. But “starting at” is doing real work in that sentence, because gynecomastia is not one condition, and the surgery is not one operation.

Gynecomastia Is Not One Thing

The term covers at least three different presentations, and I diagnose which one a patient has before I ever talk about price.

True glandular gynecomastia is firm, fibrous breast tissue that grows underneath the nipple, sometimes tender to the touch. Pseudogynecomastia is soft, diffuse fatty tissue with no true gland enlargement, and it behaves more like fat anywhere else on the body. Most of the men I see have a mix of both. The treatment plan, and the cost, follows directly from which one is in front of me.

Most Patients Wait Longer Than They Need To

This is actually very common. Although some patients in their puberty come in for correction, most patients come in once they’re financially independent and can take care of the procedure themselves. They’re usually very self-aware of the chest fullness, and it has caused them anxiety and made them uncomfortable in social settings.

Anabolic steroid use, testosterone replacement therapy, and certain medications can also cause development of the breast gland, and the gland itself grows. Here’s the misconception I correct constantly: the fullness in the chest that’s fatty in nature will decrease with weight loss, but the gland itself will not change with weight changes. It’s incorrect to assume gynecomastia can be resolved with weight loss.

Where the $7,050 Starting Price Actually Goes

The starting fee covers removal of the enlarged gland itself. It’s actually pretty rare that a patient needs only that. The ones who do are usually athletic, with well-developed pectoral muscles and no real excess fat in the chest, just fullness behind the nipple and areola. Everyone else needs more to get a flat, natural result, and the quote climbs in a predictable, explainable way rather than a surprise one.

A realistic quote is built from the gland removal plus whichever of these a given chest actually requires. That is why I can’t give an honest number over the phone. An exact quote comes after I’ve examined the tissue in person.

Can It Really Be Scarless?

We no longer have to put a scar underneath the areola to remove the gland behind the nipple and areola. I use a method where a small incision is made inferior and lateral to the breast or chest. It’s about four millimeters long, and it’s used for the liposuction of the lateral chest and the breast area. Through the same incision, I can insert an arthroscopic shaving device and shave down the gland, without a need for a large incision.

The reason we used to have to make an incision is because the breast gland is rubbery, and the liposuction cannula cannot suction out the breast gland, as it is more indurated than the soft fat. But using the arthroscopic shaver, we’re actually shaving down the gland and removing it. With this technique, we have less risk of contour irregularities. Many times, after an excisional gland surgery with a scar, there’s a large divot behind the nipple and areolar complex. This can be avoided using the arthroscopic shaving device, and also by injecting fat into the area after gland removal. The exception is the more severe case with true breast ptosis or a significantly stretched areola, which needs the donut lift, a real, if well-hidden, incision around the areola’s edge.

Why Most Men Wait Years Before Asking

The male patients who come in for this procedure have had a lot of psychological anguish because of the fullness in their chest. They’ve been bullied. They’ve stayed away from summer pool activities, or they go swimming with their shirts on, or avoid it altogether. They are self-conscious about it. They have a hard time in the locker rooms. So when they come in, they are very motivated to resolve this.

I tell them that it’s very common, and that a lot of people are in their same shoes. A consultation costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
