Love and Hate: Muffin Tops on Men

shutterstock_318097295Ask anyone and they will tell you how much they hate their love handles, aka “muffin tops.” In a survey of 500 individuals, love handles were the one thing that was most frequently identified as to what people wanted to change about their bodies if they ever got plastic surgery.

And we’re not just talking women; this is a trend growing with men as well. Men that desire a more streamlined silhouette can easily do so with elective body contouring surgeries. Body contouring refers to reshaping different areas, such as, the gut and waistline, and is ranked right behind injectable treatments (like Botox) in terms of demand for male treatments

It Began with Boardshorts

Men looking into body contouring procedures are typically interested in wearing form-fitting clothes while avoiding the belly bulge. This which be more difficult for men past the age of 30.
That’s why a fellow plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills developed the extremely successful procedure known as “the boardshort tuck.”

Like a tummy tuck, a boardshort tuck removes excess tissue, like skin and fat. But unlike common tummy tucks, this procedure is less intensive and takes less time to recover. It’s a process that takes about an hour and a half at our El Paso office, with general anesthesia.

Total cost of a boardshort tuck runs about $7500 for most patients. An incision is made above the pubic area, and while the extra tissue is removed, this procedure tightens stomach muscles. The final outcome is a firmer and flatter stomach which can draw more attention to other areas, which now seem larger because they is no longer vying for any distraction of the previous belly bulge.

Choosing the Right Option

Men everywhere across the U.S. are looking for a trimmed shape, and while “boardshort tuck” is a West Coast original term, these requests are found throughout the entire US – including here in El Paso!

Once men turn 30, it becomes more challenging for them to maintain physique. For our male patients who want to wear form fitting shirts without pushing out the bottom buttons or having their gut hang over their pants’ top seam, Southwest Plastic Surgery can easily help.

The methods we offer to fight against the bulge aren’t limited to the board short tuck. In reality, high definition liposuction for men is one of the most popular requests from males in our plastic surgery  office.

Another example of a popular trend for men is the Vanquish fat removal system. This is a fat burning process that takes about 4 sessions to complete, with no incisions or medication necessary. Designed specifically for the back, love handles/sides, and belly areas, Vanquish is an excellent solution for men who already eat healthy and exercise regularly, but can’t seem to get rid of their “spare tire”. There is an obvious reduction of fat, with typical loss of several inches after all sessions are completed.

Current Perception of Men’s Cosmetic Surgeries

Any of these treatments will ultimately reach the same target area by shaping the body away from a bugle. While men would have been more wary to ask for any of these procedures less than a decade ago, it’s becoming increasingly common here in El Paso, as well as throughout the rest of our society. At Southwest Plastic Surgery, Dr. Agullo is there to honor any man’s cosmetic strategy request. The desire to be accepted and feel good is universal; it’s not limited just to women!

Looking Back… on Bra Lines

shutterstock_308600477So many women have shared this experience: you’re feeling great, but while you’re getting dressed, you catch your reflection in the mirror from behind. Then your smile drops. That form fitting blouse, dress, or top seems to find all the frustrating spots that your diet and exercise regime don’t quite fix. And then there are those dreaded indentations in your back from your bra, even when you’ve been fitted professionally for it. A bra line back lift may help! With the help of Dr. Frank Agullo, board-certified plastic surgeon and MD of Agullo Plastic Surgery, you could be able to erase those lines and “rolls” for the better.

What are the Components of a Bra Line Back Life?

A back lift targets the laxness in the soft tissue of the upper back area, camouflaging any scarring in the space tucked behind the bra line. We prefer to keep you comfortable with general anesthesia, as is very safe and ideal for this type of procedure. Then, surgical dressings similar to paper tape retain closure of the site, until healing is complete.

Because this surgery affects your agility during recovery, Dr. Agullo recommends avoiding raising of your arms, intense activity such as lifting heavy objects, or heavy use of the abdominal muscles. Your movement should be restricted for two weeks, with gentle attention to all physical actions until you’re fully recovered.

Causes of Back Fat

Usually, back fat is a problem that occurs during the natural course of our life. And then aging brings less elasticity to the skin. But serious weight loss also plays a large factor – like the rest of your torso where fatty deposits or rolls are noted, weight gain can affect your upper back.

Who Can Get the Best Results?

A back lift is ideal for individuals who have consistently instituted a healthy diet and exercise routine for their lifestyle, but continue to have difficulties with excessive soft tissue and fat in the upper back territory. Typically, this laxity is found more in our patients who’ve experienced tremendous changes in their weight.

Will You Lose Inches or Just Lift What You Have?

Your results will lead to a reduction in the looseness and amount of soft tissues in your upper back. The difference seen will be an elimination of upper back rolls and a lower measurement around your torso, because of the lessened amount of excessive tissue. This powerful aesthetic procedure can lead to significant results in a safe manner.

What Does the Scarring Look Like?

Any surgery leaves scarring behind. With a back lift, streamlined scars are very common. What this means is that the sites of the incisions made are closed in layers, which reduces the tightness of the surgical site. Because of this, your scars typically won’t widen or stretch. The eventual scar lays straight, in the area that is covered by your bra. That way it’s hidden away even if you’re in your favorite bathing suit.

Can This Be Done to the Whole Back?

In most cases, a back lift procedure is only recommended for the upper section of the back. However, there are other procedures similar to this one that address the lower back rolls and other excessive tissues. But just as the upper back procedure doesn’t affect the lower back, so does the lower back procedure not affect the upper back soft tissue.

Should You Get One Done?

If you’re unhappy with the appearance of your upper back when you look in the mirror as you’re getting dressed, then a bra line back lift might be right for you. If you can’t achieve the change you want through altering your diet, exercising consistently, or losing weight – and you don’t want to hide in your baggier clothes to avoid showing rolls – then this might be exactly what you’re looking for! Improve Your Appearance Following Weight Loss

Improve Your Appearance Following Weight LossMajor weight loss can simultaneously be the most triumphant and frustrating experience in your life. It is no small task to stick to your diet and exercise plan. Shedding those unwanted pounds and reaching your goal feels amazing. What doesn’t feel as great? Not having the body you envisioned at the start of your weight-loss journey. What keeps many men and women motivated through their weight loss is the idea of the new, fit body they will have achieved at the end of it all. However, this healthier, leaner you is often obstructed by excess, sagging skin. If you are frustrated with your appearance, body contouring to improve your appearance following major weight loss may be just what you need.

What Is Body Contouring?

Body contouring includes a set of select procedures that are designed to eliminate excess skin and fat to enhance your body’s physique. Each body contouring procedure is customized to the patient in order to target your trouble spots and highlight your body’s natural curvature. Possible treatments included as a part of body contouring are:

  • Tummy TuckAchieves a flatter, smoother abdomen by eliminating excess skin and tightening the abdominal muscles
  • LiposuctionRemoves excess fat to enhance slender curves in women and create better body definition in men and women
  • Lower Body LiftTargets sagging tissues around the hips, thighs, and buttocks for a slimmer, more toned lower body
  • Thigh LiftRemoves sagging thigh tissue for more toned legs and to eliminate painful chafing
  • Breast EnhancementsMay include a breast lift and/or breast augmentation to restore firmness, shape, and volume to drooping, deflated breasts
  • Arm LiftRemoves sagging arm tissue for firmer, slimmer arms

Why Choose Body Contouring?

Body Contouring Before and After PhotosMany people struggle to avoid surgery during their weight loss, while others undergo surgery and don’t desire to do it again. It can be disappointing for some that surgery is their only option. However, body contouring surgeries offer numerous benefits that often outweigh the drawbacks of surgery, including:

  • Permanent and precise removal of skin and fat
  • Elimination of painful skin irritations and chafing caused by excess folds of skin
  • Removal of stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise
  • A stronger abdominal core
  • Enhancement of new, lean muscles
  • Customized procedures tailored to the patient’s needs

When Should I Consider Body Contouring?

Body contouring is often right for both men and women following major weight loss or for patients with large amounts of excess skin. Patients should be within their goal weight and should have maintained a stable weight for at least six months. Future weight loss or gain can affect the quality of body contouring surgery results. Some health conditions may prevent you from qualifying for body contouring, which will be discussed during your consultation.

If you are ready to reveal the new, fitter, and healthier you following weight loss, schedule your body contouring consultation with Dr. Agullo today. Contact our office at (915) 590-7900 or fill out our online contact form for additional information.

Designer Vaginal Surgery

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has seen a 49% increase in women that are choosing to customize their vagina through cosmetic surgery.

No, it’s not just women in the sex industry – women of all ages and backgrounds are choosing to enhance their private areas for comfort, athletic reasons, and even to feel more confident in the bedroom. It’s beginning to be one of the most common cosmetic procedures that women see me for here in my El Paso office.

What is a Designer Vagina?

So what is vaginal plastic surgery? It’s a cosmetic procedure where we correct the appearance of the labia, to reshape the size and appearance of the vagina. In many cases, women want to have a vaginoplasty to tighten their vagina, which has loosened due to age or after childbirth. Doing so can increase their confidence, appearance, and sexual pleasure. You might even wish you had done it sooner!

shutterstock_133834289Labiaplasties are another part of vaginal re-contouring. If you have uneven labia, such as extended (or stretched) labia minora that extend past the outer labia, it can cause several problems. Not only is it embarrassing, but many women find that they cannot wear the type of clothing they wish they could, or even participate in athletic activities without uncomfortable chafing and soreness.

Some women even find that by shortening their inner labia, they enjoy more pleasant intercourse and physical activities such as running or biking. Otherwise the longer labia interfere with stimulation, or become sore and chafed during athletics.

Wear Your Clothes With Confidence

Vaginal surgery isn’t just about looking great without your clothes on – it also includes the way you look and feel in them. Clothing choices have a huge impact on whether or not women come into my office for a vaginal makeover. Especially if rubbing, soreness, or uneven skin tissues are evident in their favorite clothes.

With yoga pants being all the rage (along with tight skinny jeans,) women need to look smooth and sleek in areas where the material tightly hugs against the skin. Enlarged labia can cause embarrassment or even prevent you from wearing tight athletic clothing in public.

How Much Does it Cost?

What’s the price tag on vaginal plastic surgery? A labiaplasty can range anywhere between three to eight thousand dollars. But the results are something that can make a huge impact on a woman’s day-to-day life. In fact, many women consider procedures “down there” as part of a mommy makeover or body recontouring.

I want each of my patients to know that the consultation process for a vaginal makeover is a private, comfortable experience. It’s my job to take your vision and make it a reality. When it comes to looking better in bed, feeling better during intercourse, or even comfortable during a bike ride – getting a designer vagina may be exactly what you need. Celebrity-Inspired Plastic Surgery for Your Backside

shutterstock_171719924A lot of women come into my office for a better-looking backside. After all, there are a lot of things that
squats alone can’t do. Even if you’re full of muscle, you won’t have the round, plump, full tush that, say, Kim Kardashian would.

That’s why when women come in for plastic surgery for a better looking butt, I think it’s a great idea for them to share photos with me to get a better idea of what they have in mind.

Most of the time, the photos are of women like Kim Kardashian, Sophia Vergara, and curvy women with beautiful, curvaceous bodies. With more and more celebrities embracing their curves, women in my office are doing the same thing.

Sometimes it’s actually very secretive! Many of the women who come to my El Paso office are soccer moms, teachers, lawyers and even doctors. They want the curves that these gorgeous celebrities have, but aren’t able to get them just by squatting hundreds of time throughout the week (and who would want to!)

Beautiful, Natural Curves

The thing that makes each woman unique is her personal preference. I may have one thing in mind that seems more natural and subtle, but my patient brings in a picture of a celebrity and says, “I want to look like that!” That’s no problem – but the visual aids help me make sure that we’re all on the same page.

Know Who You Don’t Want to Look Like

It also helps to bring photos of celebrities that you don’t want to look like. Maybe you’re trying to decide on the right waist to hip ratio, and you’re weighing a couple of different options when you’ve found one that’s just too far over the edge. Bring the photo in anyway!

When you’re able to visually capture what you’re looking for in your procedure, it makes it easier for us to meet your expectations and use just the right methods during your treatment.

Embrace the Curve

Before and After Butt Lift SurgeryWith more and more women (and men) embracing curvy figures, it’s easier for them to feel more confident in their bodies. Buttock augmentation with just a bit of body contouring or even something like body fat transfer may be exactly what you’re looking for!

What are you waiting for? Is it time to get more out of your current curves, or add to them for fullness that boosts your confidence? Your answers are just a visit away. Call my El Paso plastic surgery office to find out more about which body contouring options are available to fit your lifestyle.

Losing Hundreds of Pounds: the Cosmetic Disadvantage

shutterstock_241360303For men and women that have lost hundreds of pounds with the help of surgery or lifestyle changes, excessive weight loss has an ugly downside: excess skin. It’s not uncommon for 20 pounds or more of leftover skin to be left hanging from a slim frame once all of the weight underneath is gone.

The Problem

For someone who should be feeling confident about their weight loss, the bags of stretched skin hanging from their arms or stomach can take an emotional toll. While mild weight loss can allow skin to “bounce back,” this rarely happens when we’re considering hundreds of pounds of weight being lost. This can leave people feeling unhappy or even uglier in their now-healthier bodies.

When my patients have undergone sleeve or bariatric procedures to lose weight, I work with them on fitting their excessive skin to their thinner frame. We start treatment once all of the desired weight has been lost, that way we aren’t worried about additional loose skin following the procedure.

Where’s the Confidence?

As you can see, weight loss isn’t the only part of feeling confident. So is having skin that fits your body. Weight loss alone just won’t cut it, so it’s important to keep a plan in mind for the end result. The 2nd phase of that plan is usually visiting with a plastic surgeon, such as myself, to remove the baggy skin.

Some people wear latex compression garments under their clothing to control sag through their waistline. This can be uncomfortable and limit your mobility, especially if you’re trying to have a more active lifestyle; or to even feel attractive with their partner.

Looking Your Best

If you’re wary of the curious looks or questions you get from strangers, it’s probably a good time to go ahead and see someone about tightening your skin. Doing so can help you “fit” your body even better, and allow your skin to conform to what is truly underneath.

However, just like drastic weight loss, skin-tightening treatments do require a bit of getting used to. It may be that you need to have a fairly immobile lifestyle for the first few months, as your incisions heal the way we want them to.

Psychologically, this can be a challenge – especially if you’ve taken to an active lifestyle. But if you’re committed, you don’t have to start over from scratch. You might even find that you’re able to be even more active, without having to wear compression garments.

The Process

Before and After Tummy TuckSo, what’s actually involved in having excess skin removed or tightened? It’s actually a series of procedures like a tummy tuck, breast lift, or arm lift. Excessive skin is pulled away and removed, while the remaining skin is conformed to your thin frame. We can even polish off your overall look with a bit of body contouring to reshape your curves in just the right places.

For my patients considering bariatric surgery or who have already lost a hundred pounds or more, I’m always very happy to meet with them to discuss their concerns. Some people come before the weight loss has started, and others wait until they’ve reached their desired weight. Whatever phase of the process you’re in, I’m confident that my El Paso cosmetic surgery team can help you get to where you want to be!

Why are Women Over 50 Turning to Plastic Surgery?

Before and After Eyelift SurgeryWomen in their 50’s are increasingly turning to plastic surgery, and the reason why might surprise you. New financial freedoms mean that if you’re in your mid to late 50’s, you can spend your money where you want to – whether it’s traveling the world, doing some extra shopping, or even purchasing a new home.

A lot of women are using their pensions and investment incomes on things they’ve always wanted – like plastic surgery. More and more 50 and 60-somethings are coming in for cosmetic procedures like breast implants, body recontouring, and facial aesthetics (like eye lifts or Botox.)

Mature Patients Make Up the Majority

In 2015, the American Society for Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) said that individuals age 55 or over made up nearly 1/4 of all of the patients seen for cosmetic treatments. Not surprisingly, those in the age bracket of 40-54 made up over 1/3 of all patients. This can come as a surprise to most people, who assume cosmetic surgery is only for the young 20 or 30-something year olds.

Why the huge increase? It could be that more mature women are choosing to “tweak” their appearance, rather than change it completely. Subtle, age-defying procedures like eye lifts or injectables make it less obvious you’ve had any “work” done. More dramatic procedures like nose jobs are becoming less common among women in these age brackets.

Financial Freedom to Invest in Yourself

Being that people over 55 are free from a lot of the financial obligations that they had as younger adults (such as purchasing a home or raising a family,) they are often free to enjoy a bit more flexibility with their spending. Add in the fact that cosmetic treatment’s aren’t really regarded as a “taboo” thing anymore, people that might not have considered getting work done now find themselves moving forward with minor or less invasive procedures. They’re often surprised to see that cosmetic surgery is actually quite affordable for the individual on an average-income.

What Are People Getting Done?

Women are coming in for injectables or other types of non-surgical procedures to add youth and volume to their faces. They just want to feel vibrant and less tired when they look in the mirror. Since people are living longer, we don’t want to look older than the age that we feel!

While more invasive surgeries are usually left to the younger crowd, 50-somethings are not hesitant one bit to take advantage of simple outpatient or non-surgical treatments. The women that are going in for breast augmentation are typically those that had the surgery done a decade or so ago, and want to change them up a bit to fit their new body.

It’s Not Just Women! Men are Getting in on the Action, too!

And women aren’t the only ones taking advantage of convenient treatments. Men are joining in too! In most cases, men just want to look younger or less tired, and there’s a lot we can do to make that happen. Some men choose to have things done to their neck or eyes, to gently lift the skin and add a youthful glow to their appearance. Some of them are even getting beard implants!

It’s never late to do something to improve the way you look. Call my El Paso office to schedule a private consultation to find out what options might be best for you!
