What Is Involved in Neck Lift Surgery?

Dr. Agullo Necklift Patient before and after photosAre you unhappy with the look of your lower face and neck? Are you embarrassed by the sagging skin below your chin? Does it make you self-conscious about your profile? As people age, skin loses elasticity, and it is highly visible on your neck. While this is typical, it can also cause you to look older than you are. It can also cause a lack of confidence in your appearance. However, neck lift surgery, or platysmaplasty, is an effective way for you to eliminate this sagging and regain a more youthful look.

There are three standard types of neck lift techniques. A consultation with Dr. Agullo will help determine which type of neck lift procedure is most appropriate for your situation. Regardless of the procedure, most patients choose general anesthesia, as they choose to combine with other procedures as well. The options available to you will depend on your individual situation and your ultimate treatment goals.

Skin-Only Procedure

This procedure is best for patients who have a lot of excess skin but do not require any removal of fatty tissue. This is typical of patients who have recently lost a major amount of weight. For this procedure, Dr. Agullo makes an incision just behind or underneath each ear. He repositions the skin and then removes the excess. If necessary, he will remove any fatty tissues and tighten the underlying muscle. The site will be closed with sutures that will usually be removed seven days after surgery.

Neck Liposuction

Neck liposuction can be performed alone for patients without significant sagging and whose skin still has the elasticity to form to the neck after fat removal. This procedure involves the use of a cannula (a small suction device) to remove fat from your lower face, neck, and chin. Dr. Agullo will insert it through small incisions along your neck in order to specifically target areas to remove excess fatty tissue.

Combination Procedure

A combination procedure is most effective for patients who need excess fat removed, and it will require the surgical removal of extra skin. Dr. Agullo uses both liposuction and removal of excess skin to smooth and define your facial contours.

Recovery

After your procedure, you will have a garment covering your neck for at least three days to one week depending on the degree of swelling. You will experience some soreness and discomfort in your neck and chin, which can be relieved with pain medications if desired. You may experience some degree of bruising as well, this varies from patient to patient. Some swelling will be present, but this should disappear after a couple of weeks. Take it easy for the first few weeks to allow your body to heal.

A neck lift will give your face a more defined contour. By tightening and smoothing the skin under your neck, your jawline is more defined and provides a stronger balance between your facial features. Your results will be permanent as long as you live a healthy lifestyle. Any significant weight gain could cause reversal of the effects of the procedure.
