A Plastic Surgeon’s Read on the August Med Spa Specials: Laser Hair Removal, Morpheus8 Under Eye, and EZ Gel

A patient came in for a filler follow-up last week, glanced at our August flyer on the front desk monitor, and asked me the question I get every time a new board goes up. “Which of these would you actually do.”

I like that question because it forces me to say what I really think instead of reciting a menu. So here is the honest version, the read I gave her, written out properly.

The flyer says Renew, Restore, Revive. In plain terms that is laser hair removal at 15% off a bikini and underarms package, a Morpheus8 under-eye package at $800 for three sessions, and EZ Gel, a PRF-based bio-stimulator, at 20% off per session. All three run at both of our El Paso locations, the Eastside office on George Dieter and the Westside office on Silver Springs. None require a surgical consult, and all three sit on the same medical infrastructure my surgical practice runs on.

What struck me putting this board together is that two of the three specials, Morpheus8 and EZ Gel, are aimed at the same problem from opposite directions. I want to walk through why, because it is a distinction most patients have never had explained to them.

Renew. Laser Hair Removal, 15% Off a Bikini and Underarms Package.

I tell patients that August, not January, is the month to start laser hair removal, and most people do it backward.

The mechanism is straightforward. The laser is tuned to a wavelength that melanin, the pigment in hair, absorbs efficiently. The follicle heats, and that heat damages the follicle enough that regrowth slows, thins, and eventually stops in a meaningful percentage of treated follicles. That part is well established and not controversial.

The part patients underestimate is the timing requirement. Hair follicles cycle independently through active growth and rest, and a laser only affects a follicle that happens to be in its active phase at the moment of treatment. That is precisely why this is sold, and should be sold, as a series rather than a single session. Several treatments, spaced a number of weeks apart, are required to catch the full population of follicles as each one cycles through its growth phase.

The bikini and underarms pairing is a sensible starting package. Both sites cycle relatively quickly, both respond predictably, and bundling the two areas is simply more efficient than booking them independently.

One clinical point I raise with every laser hair removal candidate. Skin tone changes the calculation. Higher melanin content in the skin itself, not just the hair, changes the risk of burns and post-inflammatory pigment changes, and it changes which settings are appropriate. This is a technical judgment call that belongs to trained staff working under physician oversight, not a generic setting applied to every patient who walks in.

Restore. Morpheus8 Under Eye, $800 for a Package of Three.

Morpheus8 has been part of my Med Spa’s offerings for some time, most often for body skin tightening. The under-eye application is a more targeted use of the same platform, and it is my first recommendation when the presenting problem is skin quality rather than lost volume.

This is the distinction I spend the most time on with patients, because the two problems look nearly identical in a mirror but require entirely different treatments. Under-eye tiredness can come from volume loss, fat that has thinned or descended with age, which reads as a hollow or a shadowed groove. It can also come from the skin itself, meaning crepey texture, mild laxity, and fine lines that reflect a thinning collagen scaffold rather than any change in volume. Morpheus8 does not restore volume. If a patient’s primary issue is true hollowing, I say so plainly and point them toward a different solution. Where Morpheus8 performs well is the second category, the skin itself.

Technically, the device delivers radiofrequency energy through an array of fine, insulated microneedles placed at a controlled depth just beneath the skin surface. The needling triggers a wound-healing response on its own. The radiofrequency energy adds precise, controlled heat at that depth, which remodels the collagen architecture and tightens the tissue from within, without an incision and without disrupting the surface. In the periorbital area specifically, this allows treatment of crepiness and mild laxity in a region too delicate for many other energy-based devices.

The package structure, three sessions, reflects how collagen remodeling actually behaves. It is not an immediate effect. In my experience using this device on the body, patients see part of the result right away and then watch it continue to improve for roughly two months as new collagen forms, and the same general pattern applies under the eye. We numb the area with a topical anesthetic beforehand, downtime is minimal, and most patients notice some mild redness or sensitivity for a few days rather than anything that interrupts their week. A single session produces a modest improvement. Three sessions is closer to what patients are picturing when they ask about this treatment.

Revive. EZ Gel, 20% Off Per Session.

Patients familiar with my writing know I have covered platelet-rich plasma and platelet-rich fibrin, the PRP and PRF derived from a patient’s own blood, in the context of microneedling and the so-called vampire facial. EZ Gel extends that same biology one step further, and it happens to address the identical tired-eye complaint as the Morpheus8 special above, approached from the opposite direction.

The preparation begins the way PRF preparation always does, with a blood draw processed to isolate platelet-rich fibrin, and for EZ Gel specifically, albumin from that same sample. The result is a gel composed entirely of the patient’s own material, concentrated with growth factors and proteins that signal the body to lay down new collagen wherever it is placed. The areas most commonly treated are exactly the areas where both volume and skin quality decline first: under the eyes, around the mouth, and the temples.

That is what makes it complementary to Morpheus8 rather than redundant with it. Morpheus8 remodels the existing collagen scaffold. EZ Gel introduces a modest amount of the patient’s own biological material to build new tissue in a region that has thinned. One addresses quality, the other edges toward volume, and both originate from the patient’s own biology rather than a synthetic product.

I counsel the same patience here that I do with any biostimulator. The effect develops gradually over the weeks following each session as the body’s own collagen response matures, and a maintenance session once or twice a year sustains it. No patient should expect a visible change the same afternoon, and any practice promising otherwise is not describing this treatment accurately.
