How Does Stress Affect Your Beauty?

Beauty Restoration Treatments

Beauty Restoration TreatmentsStress is an unfortunate fact of life. For people living with chronic stress, their bodies take a serious beating. Chronic stress disrupts the natural hormone levels in your body, causing homeostatic imbalances that can lead to health issues like heartburn, respiratory problems, cardiac irregularities, and insomnia. Stress sometimes gets expressed externally as well, altering your beauty. The effects of stress may cause:

When you are stressed, your muscles have a tendency to be tense. Muscle tension in the face, mainly in the forehead and around the eyes, can etch in deep wrinkles. These wrinkles prematurely age the face.

PRP (Protein Rich Plasma) Facial Rejuvenation: Blood plasma enriched with platelets that release growth factors to promote collagen production and healing.

  • PRP treatments combined with dermal fillers or fat grafting can achieve smooth, younger-looking skin.

Hollow Eyes and Cheeks

People that suffer from chronic stress will occasionally experience bouts of insomnia. Lack of sleep leads to dark, puffy under-eye bags and hollow cheeks, which make you appear constantly fatigued.

Fat injections: The transfer of fat into areas of the face that have experienced a loss of volume.

  • Smoothing under-eye bags and plumping sunken cheeks restores a rested appearance and a bright complexion.

Weight Gain

Some people have a tendency to overeat as an emotional coping mechanism for stress. The increased caloric intake is often accompanied by a lack of motivation to exercise, which can cause you to pack on the pounds. During stressful times, your body also produces hormones that cause you to store excess fat. Unfortunately, there isn’t a cosmetic procedure to help you lose a major amount of weight. You can lose weight with the help of a nutritionist, personal trainer, and personal determination. Once you have lost weight, you may be discouraged to find excess skin and clinging fat deposits you didn’t have before.

Body Contouring: A combination of surgical procedures that may include liposuction, tummy tuck, and arm lift surgery.

  • Removes excess skin and fat
  • Tightens and tones the area
  • Restores pleasing body contours

Hair Loss

Hair loss normally occurs six weeks to three months after the initial stressful event. After a traumatic event, the body releases hormones that disrupt the natural hair growth cycle. For some people, stress causes ticks where they pull out an excessive amount of their hair.

In most cases, your hair cycle will return to normal. If it doesn’t, the stress may have exacerbated an underlying medical condition.

PRP for Hair Loss: Wakes up dormant hair follicles and stimulates them to grow.

Hair Transplant: Takes hair follicles from donor sites and transplants them to areas where the hair is thinning or bald.

Plastic Surgery Is On the Rise, “Butt” With a New Emphasis

butt liftThe results are in, and last year in 2014 has seen an increase in plastic surgery in the U.S. by as much as 3%. New results released last week revealed 15.6 Americans receiving plastic surgical procedures, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Part of it is attributed to the advancements in medical technologies, making it faster, easier and more convenient for people to go in for a nip here and a tuck there.

Most of the people that fell within that extra 3% growth rate were recipients of the minimally invasive procedures. For example, the use of fat redistribution was among those procedures, with a 2% increase in patients receiving Brazilian Butt Lifts by drawing from fat stores within their own bodies.

Another surprising trend revealed that fewer women were getting breast augmentations, while there was a significant rise in breast reconstruction surgeries for women who had gone through mastectomies. While not all breast cancer patients opt for breast reconstruction, those who do have been encouraged more by their doctors, which means there have been great strides made between physicians and plastic surgeons.

Frank Agullo of Southwest Plastic Surgery is one of the few doctors in the Southwest who offer the Butt Implants, so patients near El Paso, TX or Las Cruces, NM have been able to go to their clinic to get the butt lift surgeries. His office has also experienced an uncanny increase in the number of butt lifts performed within 2014, with nearly twice as many patients opting for the surgery over 2013. Like many doctors around the country, he guesses that the media fancy and stars like JLo or Kim Kardashian have a lot to do with the new trend.

Minimally invasive surgeries for the face, such as fillers, chemical peels and laser services were also more popular in 2014. In particular, chemical peels saw the most growth, with over 1.2 million services rendered. There were 2.3 million soft tissue fillers and just over a million laser hair removals, among many other types of non-invasive procedures.

These trends show that people want subtle changes, rather than going through major surgeries, so now with more availability of new technologies, people are becoming braver about going in to get services done. It also makes getting procedures more affordable for people, both in time and monetary investments.

  • Forever Young BBL: BroadBand Light uses a breakthrough technology to treat various skin imperfections. This FDA-approved technique is used to reverse the signs of aging through an innovative dual-lamp device. Forever Young BBL is being used on patients throughout the Southwest region to reverse fine lines, wrinkles, acne, skin pigmentation and discoloration, hair reduction and other noticeable marks on any part of a person’s body, particularly on the face and neck.
  • Ulthera: Another popular option on the non-invasive list of cosmetic enhancements includes Ulthera, which uses ultrasound technology to tighten the skin, while improving the texture and quality of its appearance.
  • BTL Vanquish: As the name suggests, patients can “Vanquish” fat without having to go through a complicated surgical procedure. This affordable new solution delivers selective radiofrequencies to gently remove stubborn fat deposits in targeted areas. Commonly used for stomach, love handles, hips, butts and thighs, the Vanquish is typically bought in packages of visits of (4) 45-minute sessions.
  • Injectables & Fillers: Patients who want a “quick fix” can come in for volumizing filler, which temporarily helps to fill in wrinkles and fine lines on the face. Crows feet, brow lines and laugh lines will effectively decrease.
  • Fat Grafting: Reshaping your body has never been easier with new fat grafting procedures, which use a patient’s own body fat to enhance curves. The fat is removed through liposuction and then injected into the desired areas.
  • Combo Surgeries: People are busy, so combining plastic surgery or cosmetic procedures is on the rise. Why not kill two birds with one stone and get a tummy tuck and breast lift all in one shot? Or, how about a rhinoplasty (nose job) with brow lift and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)? Doing these types of procedures all at the same time saves time, resources and allows your body to heal all at once, rather than coming in for multiple surgeries.
  • Better Booties: Butt augmentations are on the rise due to a number of high-profile celebrities getting booty-licious. These numbers are expected to increase.
  • Botox Cream: A new topical botulinum toxin is expected to be released in 2015. This prescription-strength alternative may be popular among patients who have resisted getting Botox fillers because of having a fear of injections.
  • Gummy Bear Implants: Gummy bears are not just for kids. These newer designed breast implants are meant to keep their shape and to look more natural than traditional silicone or saline implants.
  • Increase in Non-Invasive Procedures: With the opportunities now available for many non-invasive cosmetic solutions, such as broadband light, ultrasound technologies, heat, laser, and Vanquish radiofrequency technology, the possibilities are now far and wide, making it more affordable for anyone to get cosmetic procedures than ever before.

How to Get Full, Luscious Lips

Luscious Lips

Since the lips are one of the most noticeable features on the face, it’s no surprise that women of all ages desire to make them look plump. However, whether it be genetics or the effects of natural aging, some women are unable to achieve the lips that they feel are attractive. While you may not have lips that rival Angelina Jolie’s, there are simple ways to enhance them and make them look fuller and more supple.

Avoid Dark Colors

Dark shades of lipstick actually make your lips appear smaller. Instead, wear lighter colors that reflect light to project bigger lips.

Wear Lip Gloss

Many of the lip glosses that exist today contain volume-boosting ingredients such as peptides and amino acids that produce inflammatory reactions on the lips, causing them to literally swell. Although this effect is only temporary, it can be just what you need for a variety of occasions.

Lip Augmentation

Today, there are very safe and easy lip augmentation techniques available to enhance the shape and fullness of your lips, including dermal fillers and autologous fat injections.

For a more lasting effect, cosmetic treatment with fillers can be administered. Approved by the FDA, fillers like JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® that contain hyaluronic acid (HA) provide immediate fullness to the lips that can last for many months.

Autologous Fat Injections

By harvesting and purifying your own fat cells, fat tissue can be injected into your lips to provide long-lasting plumpness.

Unlike other lip procedures that involve inserting silicone implants that can take a week or more to recover from, lip augmentation using fillers or fat injections offer the following advantages:

  • Less bruising and swelling
  • Gradual treatment until you achieve the desired fullness
  • More control over the amount of volume added to the lips

At Southwest Plastic Surgery, we offer a variety of injectables including JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, and autologous fat transfers.

Get the Luscious Lips You’ve Always Wanted

Closeup of a woman's pink lips with a beautiful soft skin.

The lips are one of the most revealing aspects of the face and often project the first signs of emotion. For anyone who desires to maintain a youthful appearance, keeping the lips plump and smooth are musts. However, the lips begin to lose fullness as people age, eventually becoming thin and withered, which can make the rest of the face appear older and have a negative impact on a person’s self-confidence.

To restore volume and diminish the appearance of wrinkles around the lips, men and women of all ages frequently undergo lip augmentation.

Lip augmentation with filler or fat injections can provide long-lasting improvements by:

  • Restoring volume to the lips
  • Diminishing fine lines on the lips
  • Softening wrinkles around the mouth

At his El Paso practice, Dr. Frank Agullo regularly performs lip augmentation using a variety of injection methods.

Types of Treatment

Dermal Fillers

Injectable fillers used for lip augmentation are made of substances similar to those that naturally occur in the body. The most popular dermal fillers that are used for lip augmentation are JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® because they are FDA approved and easily absorb into the soft tissues. Although the results of fillers are not permanent, they typically provide satisfying results that last between six to eight months.

Fat Injections

Fat injections utilize the patient’s own fat tissue in order to provide permanent results. After fat is taken from an area of the body where it is abundant (abdomen, back, thighs), it is purified and injected directly into the lips.

Risks and Complications

The side effects of lip augmentation with injections are very minor in comparison to other forms of invasive lip augmentation. The lips may feel tender and appear slightly swollen or bruised directly after treatment, but these symptoms will subside over the following few days.

The Vampire Facelift

Brunette woman touching her faceWith the season of ghosts and goblins looming, we at Southwest Plastic Surgery thought it would be the perfect time to expand on a treatment that is becoming quite popular here in El Paso, the Vampire Facelift.

The Vampire Facelift, also known as platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections, received this name because it utilizes the patient’s own blood to treat facial wrinkles. Although blood is mainly a liquid (plasma), some of the more solid components within the blood (platelets) contain hundreds of proteins that stimulate cell growth and repair damaged cells. In fact, PRP treatments are regularly used to repair injured or degenerated tissue that is common among athletes. When PRP is injected into the face, the growth factors activate the cells in the skin to produce new collagen and fatty tissue and repair any cellular damage. The result is a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance that will continue to improve for up to three months and last for up to two years.

Dr. Agullo begins this procedure by drawing blood from the patient’s arm. The blood is then taken to a centrifuge where its components (serum, platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells) are separated. A combination of white blood cells and platelets form the concentrated PRP that is known to minimize wrinkles, restore facial volume, and even reduce acne scars. After a numbing agent is applied, Dr. Agullo injects the solution into the desired areas of the patient’s face.

Platelet Rich Plasma vs. Facelift Surgery

Since the procedure only takes 45 minutes to complete and requires little to no downtime, those with busy schedules will likely prefer the Vampire Facelift over a surgical facelift. This procedure will also meet the needs of patients whose main concern is facial wrinkles and diminished facial volume. For those with sagging skin or skin that has poor elasticity, a surgical facelift is likely a better option.

Platelet Rich Plasma vs. Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

PRP treatment is sometimes more effective than hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvéderm® and Restylane®, in more delicate areas of the face where the skin is very thin. PRP is also known to improve skin texture more effectively than hyaluronic acid fillers.

Dr. Agullo also uses PRP treatment to restore hair loss and aid with wound healing. At Southwest Plastic Surgery, we are proud to offer advanced treatments such as these that meet the diverse needs of our patients. If you are interested in the Vampire Facelift in the El Paso or Las Cruces areas, contact Dr. Agullo at (915) 590-7900 or fill out our online contact form to schedule your consultation.
